my defender clunks when i depress the clutch when moving. I'm thinking its the A frame balljoint but i don't know how to check the joint for wear. Could you help me please?
Cheers Eddy

long bar between the diff housing and the "A" frame will show up any "lift" in the ball joint, from the front of the diff

What gearbox is in this defender is it the r380? Because if so I had the same problem with my defender and it turned out to be the mainshaft which runs off the transmission into the transfer box. On the r380 there is no lubricity between the mainshaft and the input gear of the transfer box, therefore the splines wear on the mainshaft and cause the clunk which feels like the a-frame ball joint. The cure for this is a new mainshaft and input gear which I have recently had done.

Mainshaft splines clunk and a-frame ball joint clonk are two very distinctive different clonks. I had em both on my old 110 when I got it. Once you've had em yo anrecognise what it is just by the feel of it.
