no backbone these days. ah remember when we had to climb up chimley fer wur dinner. then strip and rebuilt a traction injun while stood in a frozen lake.
not today they got no spine

i did wat u ssaid slob but it made no difference. Still no spark, we only get a spark now and then if you know wat i mean. Everything else is fine- petrol is there timing is fine its turnig over fast enough but just wont start.

Did you static timing ?
A mate of mine once had a escort that would not start and it kept loosing it's timing. It turned out to be a F***** distributor drive cog.
Ps
its also worth checking the compression too

hmmmm. think me dad did staic timing not so long ago. The compression is fine as i have to turn it over by the handle to let me dad do the points. Wats the best way to do the timing if it wont start.??

Put a working plug on the lead for cyl 1 and rest it against the block
Turn the engine until cyl 1 is 3deg BTDC (See link)
loosen off the distributor and with the ignition on turn the distributor until you get a spark.

This is a rough and ready way and I'm sure that everyone else will have a alt method.

page 2 for the timing marks

Ps
You cant do dynamic timing with out a running engine so put away your strobes until it runs.

just get some one to crank it while you turn dizzy slighty in both directions until it fires... keep yer mits away from moving parts..
.
.
.
but if you says its only sparkin intermittantly then this wint help!
.
.
.;if yer points are good and yer leads and cap are good then what about the coil aand all connections
