Steel bullbars can no longer be manufactured or offered for sale. so the replacement alternative is made of ABS plastic

So what legislation covers things like the "shadow bumper" like i got on mine ^ and others (guardian etc) metal tubulars with A bars??

If its already fitted you're fine as long as your insurers know.

There are a number of grey areas around the legislation in relation to this however

1) The offence is manufacturing or selling or importing non-compliant bullbars. So if you're not making or selling then you're not committing an offence. Also if you make your own as a one off is that "manufacturing" (whatever you do don't sell any to your mates, via ebay etc)?? Why not drive to Norway. Turkey, the Channel Islands or anywhere else outside the EU and fit one! As long as you don't do it every week and sell the one you import each week on Ebay you are not selling or importing.

2) The legislation refers to "Bullbars". What is a bullbar exactly? If you fitted a bumper like yours with a winch it is, arguably, not a bullbar but a winch mounting system. Therefore if its not a bullbar but a winch mount no offence. Other forums report winch bumpers fall under other legislation but no one seems to advise what legislation that is? Anyone know

Here's a government report on the issue.
http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/research/briefings/snbt-01216.pdf

Note that their own studies showed on 2-3 fatalities per year result from bullbars, and 40 serious injuries. This is from totals currrently around 2,500 deaths and 231,000 injuries. The recent weather will probably have wiped out any gain from the bullbar ban.

So a huge amount of taxpayers money went into a negligible impact on road safety. My argument is that the same effort and money could have been spent on other measures that would have produced a far superior outcome. Educating/licensing cyclists for one.

Just got given a wrap around bullbar for my TD5, the thing is, it looks like i would have to cut slots in the bumper to get it fitted. Looking through the air intake mesh i can see where it's meant to fit. Is this another LR ploy to get you to buy a new bumper or do i just cut out slots? Is there a template, or has anybody did it before?????
