I am having issues with my 98SE RR. I drove it into town today and did some shopping for the house but when I got ready to leave 2 hours later it wouldnt start. I left the windows cracked assuming I would only be out of it for a few, but you know ho wthat goes. Well now it wont turn over I have a felling that it has something to do with the alarm I did see someone leaning on it while holding a conversation with someone in a near by parking spot. I was going to replace the starter, but I took a jumper cable and ran it to the smaller starter cable and it turned but didnt start even while a friend turned the key to the start position (3). Well I also tried disconnecting the battery for 30 minues but that did nothing except loose my programmed stations in the radio (glad I remembered that code). If any one has some advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Prior to the vehicle stopping the check engine light was on but it was an error code dealing with the coolant temp sensor. I changed it but didnt have it reset. When I turn the key to the start(3) position lights go out and nothing happens. at the 2 position idle, all lights on including check engine, but not servie engine.

Thanks for your help!!

The engine doesnt rotate, so I didnt think there was a reason to check the fuel. or plugs.
No,I meant when you put the wire straight down to the starter - if there are sparks then it could be as simple as a failed starter relay in the engine compartment fusebox.

Hi, just a thought, a friend of ours is having a similar problem with her P38, could it be something to do with the inhibitor switch in the gearbox (the switch that stops you starting in gear) as hers failed meaning that the car wouldn't start.

I CONFIRM YOUR OPINION .

I figured out what it was (or should I say my mechanic did), It was the starter. He fixed it and I am back up and running. Thanks for everyones help!!!

There is also a known issue with P38 imobiliser and mobile phone masts my local LR dealer(Stratsones Cardiff) has had a mast built across the road and know P38s wont start in one side of the car park however push it to the other side and hey presto it works (also heard M+S local carpark has a dead spot) however if this happens display will read engine imobilised and can be started if emergency keycode is used in door lock(do you carry yours in the car?) i Know this as i worked there and could only park round the back. The same system was used on some rover cars and they seem to be affeted as well but only by some mobi networks.
