It sounds like you have an earth fault. Try connecting a jump lead direct from the battery negative to somewhere on the engine. Does it still do it now or is it fixed? If it's fixed it then you will need to replace or fit extra engine/gearbox earth straps. If it still does it then check the earth to the dash board.

Also check the charge from your alternator. It sounds more like an earth fault than a charging issue to me though.

if its got a new alternator on it then its 99% an earth problem. more than likely the main earth but i'd check them all just to make sure

A few questions:

1. Did you replace the alternator because the battery went flat?
2. How long does the battery hold a charge?
3. How old is the battery?
4. Did the troubles start after you changed the alternator?

If this is so the only cable you will have disturbed from the barttery would be the earth which you will have tighened securely when re connecting, this would rule out any other earthing cables. We must also assume you re connected all the cables to the alternator otherwise the tell tale lamp on the dash panel would glow continously alerting you the a fault. All this being so without any other work having taken place the fault would point toward the battery.
