Alright chaps, I recon I have a P38 with a smaller than spec battery, which might explain the lazy starting, and first battery drain over the weekend, after doing a coolant change and stop starting to bleed the air out. halfords HCB072

Guarantee: 4 Years
Startup Power: 550 Amps
Type: Calcium
AH Value: 68
Bench Charge: 6.8 Amps
Dimensions (LxDxH): 261x175x220mm
Reserve capacity: 125
Weight (kg): 16.69

So this is the current battery, anyone else had similar problems. Where the best place to get a propper spec battery. The one above is a different size too.

Right spec is?

190x175x353
12v
95Ah
830 CCA

Yeps, way too small...must be heading towards autumn/winter, lots of battery questions!

More CCA's the better...over 800 is good, 1000 great..go to agricultural supplier, measure battery and check which side pos is on...then buy big!

Cheers matey, no wonder it drained down in no time.

Try battery megastore DC31-1000, 135AH 1000CCA £98 delivered, 4 year warranty, it's the biggest that will go in the box:) I have no connection with them, just a happy customer:D

Just been checking, the only batteries I can find that fit are the smaller ones with lower cca. Cheers datacheck. Will give them a try.

353 is too long.

i just got one of those Halfords jobbies.... didn't have much choice as mine died on a Sunday afternoon and needed the rr for work the next day.....!
seems OK now... plenty of power.... didn't realize it was too small in capacity....!
physically, yes it is quite small but just thought modern battery's these days don't need to be big in size...

so are Halford listing battery's inadiquite for the job....?

Most of the websites that sell batteries seem to be selling ones to the same spec as halfords, don't think they can all be wrong, can they?

Im glad i found this post.
I also have a P38 4.6 auto lpg.
Suffering the same problems lazy start, not holding charge.
I changed the alternator, disconnected the alarm MHZ thing in the back, had the electrics checked for power drains, but couldnt sort the problem.
That when i noticed the size of ther battery CCA, only 550ah. Si i took my battery from my ldv cub 2.3 and tried that (after messing with the leads to get them to fit!)
started on second attempt, straight in with no lazy start sympthoms.
Quite a few landy owners i spoke to about this on green lane days( also have a 110 county) All said the same thing...bigger battery needed!
So, as the battery is only 1 year old and comes with a 4 year guarantee from halfords, i rang the deppot i bought it from, and after explaining the situation, they have kindly agreed to exchange the battery for another one with a CCA of 750ah. hopefully this will do the trick..ill let you all know
This battery is being recommended by halfords for all P38 models

750CCA is too small for the diesel IMO.

yuasa has drained down when left for over a week once, still kicked her over but died. Charged her up again and no issues since. I stuck a maplin 9.99 solar charger on to keep her topped up when not in use. Should have bought a bigger one really, not enough light in winter. Travelling to and from work in dark heater fans on full etc only 8 miles journey doesn't help.
