Ive been looking for a Discovery for 1 Month now, seen loads some goodish,most badish, Ive £2000 to spend. Am I asking too much for a decent old Discovery for £2000

Seems The decent ones are the TD5's for about £3500

Im fed up of travelling around and when I get there there not as described and loads of them have rotted boot floors, and leaks,

Sorry for all the negativity, but I feel as if I see another S""T Disco I will buy a normal car.

Anyone else fed up of looking ????:(

know what you mean - but my 97 300tdi is ok, yes it has a bity of rust here and there - but I seem to have the only one without leaky sunroofs ( oops done it now) and with a solid boot floor ( and again).
don't give up on the green oval there are some out there ( somewhere):rolleyes:

What do you all think about the TD5's

Been told too much to repair with computer stuff ????
 
thats why i went for a 200tdi that needed some work cost 400 and i reckon about 3-400 to put back on the road plus 200 to buy my welder
 
I reckon the 2 grand price bracket is the problem. New enough to be worth 2 grand, but old enough to be well knackered. Either accept that work is likely, or buy a much newer one.
 
A true landy owner will only spen a max of £500 because of the repairs that need to be done.On a 2k wagon the cost of repairs will be about the same.Get a V8 for bout 500 and wack on lpg if not done all ready.OR 200tdi shed

yep thats why i paid 400 ;) fer mine an its a shed an ill fix it :rolleyes:
seen some at £1600 and a a v8 at 2000 but all needed about the same amount o welding as mine and had as much needing done so saved mi cash and can afford to but a decent welder:D :D to fix it and still be well under 1500 ;) and know itll last another 14 years of abuse :eek: :D :D

I got 2 door range with lpg an a V8.....

wheel arches ****ed and bottom of the apillars gone.Every thing else good.Got e welder total cost wiv new tyres [£300] bout 1800 quids or so.Fully serviced new oil and filters etc....
 
Alright mate, I bought mine about 2.5 months ago.

Got a 98 Disco 1 with 96k on the clock. SO FAR the only prob I've found is the viscous coupling is seixed so the fan is perm on. Nice in the rear doors, nice under where the rear seat belts are fixed under the rear wheel arch...
 
What I've been doing lately is buying a sub 500 quid disco with MOT. Using it for however long the tax and test is then breaking it and buying another one with the proceeds. Haven't had any mechanical problems so far and rust doesn't matter as I've no intention of getting another MOT. I started with a cheapie to tide me over while my 110 was in bits but I reckon I'll be well into me third one before the 110 sees the light of day again.
 
unfortunately rot is un-escapable in a landy, as the others have said you need to either spend a lot more on a less than 5yr old one and get it well waxoiled to stop any rot or buy one that is showing it's true colours so to speak and allow a bit for welding etc, even if you have to pay somebody to weld it for you it will still work out cheaper. i paid a bit much for my v8 lpg rangie at £700 but a boot floor,cills, and front inner arches only cost me £300 so it works out cheaper and you now it's all done and not bodged ;)
 
The td5 can be dear...
Listen to the advise before you and spend as little as possible.Find a good dude local that is willing to dig around with you as 4 eyes is better than 2.You could do very well and also get some decent off roadin done too.
 
It's old uns all the way for me. My 1990 110 is stripped to the chassis at the moment. admittedly it will have cost me a bit by the time it's finished but it will be properly sorted out and should last me for donkeys years. Dunno if I'd do the same with a disco though the bodywork's far to complicated. Funny how disco chassis don't seem to rust like a defender though.
 
True, most of the chassis ive seen on the disco's have been ok, boot floors mainly,

Boot floors, can they be welded or do you have to replace ?
 
For the cost involved , it is most likely easier and cheaper to replace the complete boot floor, especially as they are available as one complete panel.
 
There is no need to spend your £2000 on a piece of **** rust bucket. If you're not going to use the Landy as an everyday vehicle, why not get a series III on a new galv chassis with a properly restored bulkhead?
 
I paid £1295 for my 98 R reg V8 Disco and I love it.
The boot floor has already been replaced and there isn't too much rust elsewhere.

There is a catch 22 to what landykev is after:
  • Disco 1s rot in the body but not really in the chassis.
  • Disco 2s rot in the chassis but not so in the body.
Be patient, take your time, there are good ones out there but they are getting harder to find.
You could always pay double for a 'rust free Japanese import' :rolleyes: but even these will rust away eventually..........

BoomerV8 I so far have not looked at any V8's as Im thinking (running Cost) Do they drink as much as Im thinking ?
