Hi All
My lovely neighbour Ruth has got a 94 TDI Discovery Automatic, Which she lovingly referers to as Arthur, who is rather sick at the moment.
It has no forward drive as such, it will creep along quite happily on tick over but putting your foot down does nothing more if anything its stops it from just creeping.. but reverse works perfectly,
Any ideas where or what to look for please.
The so called nice helpful garages have rubbed there hands at a lady customer with £ signs in there eyes & said New Gearbox Madame only £1400 fitted.
would really apreciate any advice I know nothing what so ever about auto boxes other than they need oil.

usually it is only the fisrt clutch pck in box clutch A that needs replacing. can be done without stripping whole box as it sits directly behind pump housing ,you can buy plates separatley cost about £80 for parts
 
:welcome2: to the mad house, ide go along with what James said but realy it would be better to take it to or get a transmission specialist to look at it, would help if we knew where you are some one on here may be able to help.
 
the problem is theres not many of us left that are prepared to or can repair stuff nowadays as usually autos dont need full recon

Very true matey very true, i however don't do auto boxes my self but i have a very good and reliable firm who do them for me, unfortunatly most garages can't be arsed to take the trouble to diagnose problems properly and just look at the quickest/easiest way of fixing it (most of them don't understand auto boxes) so new gear box sir/madam is the easy option but rarely the cheapest for the customer
 
Thank you for the reply/advice I'm in Bedfont near Heathrow. I would be grateful to know if there really was such a lovely rare animal as an honest mechanic in my area as unfortunatley I wont be able to do the fix myself as i'm in hospital on wednesday for a knee replacement so gonna be knacker'd for a few months for doing anything let alone dropping a gearbox out..

Hello there
I took yours & Oldskool's advice found a decent enough chap to look for me & he is saying the torque converter has gone . as reverse doesnt need it & when driving backwards the momentum is putting some oil in to converter which allowing it to creep forward till it looses pressure again.
He quoted me £100-150 for torque converter & about £200 250 to fit & fix for me seems reaonable to me so going ahead with him Fingers crossed Will post how it went when he's done

Have you looked at the cable from the stick to the gearbox, when i had a disco 2 t reg the cable came loose at the gear box and could only get park and reverse,
 
it needs torque convertor to go forwards or backwards ,hes talking bollocks any transmission specialist that knows zf boxes would know its clutch A.and not a torque convertor fault what provides drive for reverse then, the outside of tc drives oil pump which works clutch packs to select gear, and pukps oil abainst a rotor inside tc which in turn drives input shaft to gear box the higher the pressure the more torque is transfered to rotor through oil hence the name ,there is a lock up clutch inside which locks convertor at 50ish mph which then gives you direct drive
 
As above again, this mechanic your talking about doesn't know what he's talking about, find a transmission specialist. The torque converter doesn't know or care if you are going backwards or forwards.
 
Another test is to put the selector into 1. If it drives in 1 and reverse then it will be UD2 that is broken, again an easy fix. If not as James says A clutch is favorite and easy repair.
Look for automatic specialist in your area and get some quotes.
 
Mine had same problem bu i had 1st and reverse but nout else.j james told me what had gone got a box off a mate so swapped box and fixed other and got my money back.local transmission wanted 2100 to recon the box and 700 to fit reacement

Thats pricey Ascroft charge £675 for a recon and £1200 fitted inc vat

There are a couple of unidirectional sprag clutches in them and UD2 breaks, putting it in 1st engages a clutch that bypasses it which is why yours set of in "1", if you get them going and then move to "D" they will change up the other gears ok but if you stop you will need to select "1" to set off again.
Selecting "1" when setting off under heavy load is a good idea as UD2 is a week point in the 4HP. Ashcroft used to do an uprated UD2 which would be worth fitting when rebuilding.

so selecting 1st when doing a heavy pull and not just leaving in d is the way to go then ?
