I am fed up with my ignition on the 93 LSE, I had it replaced a couple of years ago, and it is playing up again... when I put the key in, it only works one way around, and then not always, it can take up to 10 / 15 mins to get it work, yet other times it is instant :(

I would like to replace steering lock / ignition system with a switch / button system...

e.g. lift a cover and flick a switch
then push button to start.

push button again to stop...

not sure how feasible this is, or whether people have done it, I assume that it must be straight forward as this is the approach taken with racing cars etc...

I have found loads on the internet about having a push button to replace the last stage of turning the key, but as I have no problem doing that when I can do the first stages, and can do no stage when I have problems, this will not help... :)

I would like to totally replace the ignition system...

how would it work with the alarm?

would there be an issue with insurers seeing it as easier to steal (though not sure whey anyone would wish to steal it, and no different to hot-wiring it)...

and anyway, I already have a cut off switch on the bonnet which isolates the battery totally...

dj_factor,

thank you for this - looks an interesting kit.
however I don't think that does quite what I want, what I would like to do is to remove the key totally... (if I use their system I retain the same issue of the key not turning...) I am thinking more of a racing car kit where you lift a cover, flick a switch and then press a button...

my friend has got this on his range but, flick switch then button to start/stop. . but its used off road so he not go immobiliser or anything any more. . not sure how he got round that though! ill give him a ring and ask him later on

right basically

- the switch turns on electrics and all the other stuff that gets turned on when you turn the key twice, glow plugs etc if your diesel, not sure whats turned on with petrols - this is not so simple! as you need to still get around the immobiliser - if you wanna keep it, hes checking whether he still has his on or not!!

- the push switch is just attached to the start motor - the positive wire that comes of the starter that is attached by a spade connector, and then also to a live on the battary - starting the starter!! this is the simple one

The immobiliser and alarm are easy enough to disarm when you know how. I bought a 'chip' for about £20 from a land rover specialist to get past mine when I lost the remote while it was locked - major inconvenience. Anyway the chip is only a jumper wire which disables the immobiliser so this is really simple. pm me closer to the time and I'll get you the name of the company or if they don't hang out on this forum the info on the jumper wires:)

Snow - thank you that makes a lot of sense...
SpudH - many thanks, will certainly do that...

need to know see what my mechanic makes of the idea (he builds and races V8 stock cars as a hobby, so he may have some wacky ideas of his own - he tried to persuade me to stick a 640Bhp engine in the RR :D but the c. 245bhp I have is enough - esp. for corners!)

also need to think through insurance - they make think that it is becoming easy to pinch if there is no key...
