I have a 90 that has been converted to a 200 tdi engine and the temp gauge is right up but engine is not running hot. Is the 200 tdi temp sender the wrong one for a gauge that has been for a petrol engine ? What sender do i use please ? Thanks, Mark.

90 temp gauge is wrong for the 200, get a 200 temp gauge off ebay and swop em over and jobs a goodun. Else just live with it, if it hits the max, worry!

Hi Oggy
I am presuming the 90 was previously a turbo or na. I had similar problem when I converted my NA for a 300 tdi. Firstly did the 200tdi come from a defender or disco. Mine was from a disco so what I ended up doing was changing the gauge to a 300tdi defender gauge which did not improve thiongs until I changed the sender to a defender sender which is different to the disco sender now all good.

Iv got the same problem!

Just phoned my local Landy Dealer with regards this to ask about a price on a gauge!

I did have a 3.5 V8, now it has a Disco 200tdi. When i phoned up, the guy on the phone said the temp gauges are the same part number up to a certain year (Cant remember what year) and that i would just need the correct sensor for the engine! (200tdi sensor)

This was very comforting as he also said the new temp gauge would cost £135 not including VAT......... Fook rite off!!!

Bought a 200tdi Disco to 90 temp gauge from stevey parkers! :D

Hope this shines a bit of light!

Scott

gauge out of a 200 engined 110/90 off ebay tend to sell for less than a fiver = perfect match and no wondering what thread your block will have as you keep the original sender

I agree with you with the ebay bit sean but a bit confused what you mean by 'wondering what thread your block will have'?

200 blocks have at least 2 different sizes of thread for the sender - some geek will be able to tell you the size and date of change over

The sensors are MATCHED to the gauge - if it was matched to the engine then the different resistances of the sensors would change what the gauge says. So you will find there is more than one 200tdi sensor but you are only interested in a Defender one.

Get a DEFENDER sensor that fits a 200tdi and it will work with the DEFENDER gauge. I fitted a DEFENDER sensor for a 300tdi to my 300tdi engine which runs to what was a 2.5Petrol gauge - works perfectly.

Now to clear up dates and things a little, derived from my experience:

The 300tdi Defender used the same sender until the TD5 came out, and the gauge was the same from the late 80's till the end of the 300tdi engine period - so based on the fact you can use a 300tdi sensor and hook it up to a 80's gauge, the gauge must have stayed the same right through until the TD5 came out.

put a after market gauge in for 50 quid better and more accurate than landy originals they fit into top hose with a joiner you fit into the hose

that's incorrect, and it's why people thinks they have done something wrong when fitting a 200 disco engine to replace a TD and find the standard (TD engined) gauge reads incorrectly

unless when you say late 80s you mean the first defenders already fitted with a 200, but then that negates the object ?

No the same gauge (AMR2631) (which can be bought for £39 btw scott) was fitted until 1998 when the TD5 came out.

The reason people get the wrong reading is because the have the sensor for the Disco. If you get the Defender version sensor it will work.

If you had a 2.5TD, and put a 200tdi in, you would need to fit the gauge from the TD or buy a Defender 200tdi gauge. If you put a 300tdi you would need to fit the sensor for a 300tdi Defender.

do you mean sender ?

if you mean fit the TD sender (within the 200) to match the existing TD gauge then theres an issue with the threads not matching

errr the sender from my 2.5TD went straight into the Disco 200Tdi without any problem with the threads ....

that's the issue, some have a course some have a fine thread - whereas if you get a gauge to suit the sender 52 mm is always going to be 52mm
