Hello fellow owners, my names David. I would a appreciate a little help. I just changed my battery and now how zero electrics, not a flicker. I checked the under-seat and passenger fuses but all are intact? Does anybody have any experience or knowledge that might help me please? TD5 2003 not a TDI as I wrote in the title.

Why did you change the battery and what voltage is it reading?...
Hi Shippers, Basically the battery didn't have enough juice to start the engine this morning. I put the battery on charge but it would not charge past about 11.7 volts. The battery was very old and I could see acid corrosion (white powder) formed near the positive terminal, it looked like the old type unsealed. So I brought a brand new Bosch one that has a full charge, but there is absolutely no power to any electrical system after fitting it. Putting a volt meter across the terminals shows a charge of something like 12.7v. Maybe I have broken one of the terminal wires?

I would go and check clean all wires that are connected to terminals and make sure youv'e not missed one...put a dmm from battery positive to engine block and see if youv'e got volts does horn work? Start with the easy stuff to check and you can rule out lots...
 
If you did not follow the correct procedure changing the battery the vehicle will be immobilised and the key fobs will require resynchronising.

Battery removal and replacement
Your vehicle may be fitted with a battery
backed-up sounder, which operates as an
anti-theft siren if the main battery is
disconnected.
If it is necessary to remove the main vehicle
battery, it is ESSENTIAL to adopt the following
procedure before disconnecting the terminals
in order to prevent the siren from sounding:
1. Turn the starter switch ’on’ and then ’off’.
Then remove the key.
2. Disconnect the vehicle battery WITHIN 15
SECONDS (if it is not disconnected within
15 seconds, the back-up siren will sound
immediately the battery terminals are
disconnected).
ALWAYS disconnect the negative (’-’) terminal
first. When replacing, connect the positive
(’+’) terminal first.
If the siren sounds when the battery is
reconnected, it CANNOT be turned off in the
normal way (ie. by operating the handset
buttons). To deactivate the siren, disarm the
alarm system with the handset and turn the
starter switch to position ’II’.

Resynchronisation of Remote Handset
If either the remote handset battery or the vehicle battery is removed or disconnected, the rolling part the handset
code is lost and the handset(s) need to be resynchronised to the anti-theft alarm ECU. The resynchronisation
procedure is as follows:
• Disconnect the vehicle battery.
• Wait for 30 seconds for residual current to dissipate.
• Reconnect the vehicle battery.
• Carefully prise the remote handset apart and remove the battery. Avoid unnecessary handling of the battery.
• With the battery removed, press either the lock or unlock button several times to remove residual current from
the circuitry.
• Check the handset battery with a voltmeter. If the battery voltage is less than 2.7 volts, replace the battery.
• Ensure that the battery contact surfaces are clean and replace the battery in the handset clip with the + symbol
uppermost. Put the two halves of the handset case back together.
• DO NOT press any buttons.
• With the handset within range of the vehicle, press the lock button four times in quick succession. The
anti-theft alarm ECU will respond by locking the vehicle.
• Press the unlock button once to complete the resynchronisation procedure.

Yes I will do. Will take the terminals off, take battery out and makesure I haven’t left anything off.

Thankyou Scooby for the reply, yes I too read this. But as there was no beeping or alarms or any immobiliser warning lights then this is not the issue here.

thank you I will. I viaually inspected it and it looked fine. i will take it out and run a circuit test accross it to be sure. I will also check the live into the underseat fusebox from the battery positive and connect the negative of the multimeter to an earth to see if there is a circuit and the main fuse box is getting 12v. If that doesnt work will move the negative to the battery negative and at least I will know if it is a problem with an earth.

Theres a guy on youtube *south main auto* he does all the simple stuff like horn works cause it goes to ground etc...we did a non starting passat here at the garage interior light didnt come on as well as no-electrics at all same fuse for immobaliser and interior light which we learnt from reading the owners handbook before replacing parts...
