Hello all - we have a 1988 90 TD with the drum braked rear axle. we have been getting binding brakes, usually only on one side, I have changed the drums for those on my Series One (same part number) to check to see if that was the problem - it isn't. It never occurs on both wheels at the same time, and sometimes it's not a problem.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

The first thing to do is clean and adjust the brakes to make sure everything is operating correctly. It may be you have a sticky wheel cylinder in which case you may as well replace it as new ones are so cheap, while you are at it I would do the opposite side as well as that will be just as old and you have to bleed the system anyway.

Unless you fitted the drums just for a trial and have now removed them fitting S/H drums to S/H shoes isn't really a good idea. The original shoes & drums will have worn together and you may get rapid / un-even wear until the replacements bed in.

Thanks for your reply Litch, i have cleaned and adjusted the brakes, and both wheel cylinders are new so i don't think it's those. I did only swap drums for a trial, so i'm sending SWMBO out tomorrow to buy a new set of drums and shoes, i'll probably fit new snail adjusters too - lets hope that cures it!

Hmmmmm, that's practically everything covered.

Are the springs in good condition and correctly fitted?

Good question. They are correctly fitted, but may not be as good as they could be - i'll add them to the shopping list too!

I bet you've partially squashed one of the rear brake pipes somewhere in the system. That would be enough to not fully release the fluid pressure to the rear brakes.
