Have a 1986 90" & about to fit a new chassis. Have been offered a 1996 Discovery rear axle complete. Will it swop with my existing axle without any great engineering feats? Cheers.

Yes but you will need to make up new brake pipes, also it will be 24 spline and the front will be 10 spline so really you want a pair...

Will the input flange need to be changed? rubber doughnut on Disco and 4 bolt on Defender? or does it depend on the year Disco its from.

300 defender is 4 bolt, it will fit don't worry about 24/10 spline axle differences there the same ratio. New brake lines new bushes whilst your there it's a fairly easy swap, you'll need to source a 4 bolt 21 splineflange from somewhere as some 4 bolt are 4 spline and so won't fit so make sure you get the right one

You will need to change the flange yes, the Disco axle will have the 3 bolt flange on it, they are cheap enough and a local supplier will be able to get it no problem. The ratios are the same but personally I would prefer to have both axles at 24 spline, the rear will be able to take a lot more abuse and likely to help speed up the demise of the front.

How does the front know that the back is 24 spline:confused:

I am in the proces of doing the same. Also a 1986 Defender 90 with originally a 2.5TD engine.

When I bought it, it was fitted with a Defender 200Tdi and now I want to have newer axles under it.

I bought a set of axles but I think they are from a 1993/4/5 Defender 300Tdi.

The rear axle has disc brakes, I know I will have to make up some brakelines for over the rear axle but do i need to change anything else in the brake system??

Is my current master brake cilinder OK and do i need to change the valve in the rear brakeline? I am finding some mixed info on that subject.

Just new lines don't worry about Anything else it's all pretty standard, new bushes whilst your there and that's about it

I will renew all four brake calipers, pads, mounting hardware, seals, bushes, shocks, turrets, SS brake hoses, springs and balljoints. :D

Thanks for the info. I will leave the rest of the brake system as is.

Its not a case of that, its the fact that 10 spline shafts are inherently weaker than 24 spline ones, by having shafts on the rear that are tougher and flex less it will put more stress on the front. It doesn't 'have' to be done but I personally would swap both axles, its what I done with mine as the front axle benefits from thicker castor arms as well as stronger shafts/diff.

Fook me might aswell buy new axles !
