Hello all.

After a bit of help if its available about my 2.5 petrol 90.
I just bought it and picked it today. I only paid £350 from a local bloke who's always hand landys, I knew it had starting problems when I bought it so I bought a new condenser and coil. Ive replaced the coil this morning after towing it Home.


After changing I've checked the voltages and there's no feed to the coil. There's two wires running into the coil, a red/white (switched live) and a black one straight to earth on the bulkhead. I also checked resistance along the old coil and it showed open circuit?


It turns over fine and there's fuel flowing through the filter and there's no water in the fuel and its not stale. Just no spark.

IIRC, one wire comes from ignition side of circuit into coil, and the other wire comming from the coil goes to distributor.
Ive got a 2.5 petrol, i'll have a look tommorow for you.
Have you had the dizzy cap off?
 
Thank you all for your help, I'll have another look today, need to buy a battery with some more balls as well, the bloke said it didn't have a battery when it changed hands to him, so I'm using dads van battery.

Yep had the cap off it was a bit wet inside, points slightly green so dried and cleaned up, replaced rotor arm, as I got a new one with new coil, didn't change condenser or contact breaker as my college tutor said that I would have to check dwell angle if I did that, and I don't have a meter for correcting this.

Jamesmartin and craig, I'll check to make sure the wire doesn't go straight to earth, if it does go to dizzy I will white it off and give it a good clean up.

Hope I can get the old thing running, bought based on price really, but chassis is solid, bulkhead is too, only problems are rotten doors and the starting issue.

you should change points, condender ,leads ,plugs,cap and arm at the same time ,points can be set using a feeler guage 14-16 thou or 0.40mm
 
The plugs are brand new, must have been changed when it was in the garage, looks like new leads some of those fancy blue silicon ones.

So I should order a new cap and points set? How do I set points, sounds ridiculous but they don't teach this at college as its all electrical ignition now.

and condenser ,point you turn dizzy so that one of the 4 lobes is opening points at its max then set the gap between the contacts with the feeler guage ,check a few times as retightening the screw sometimes moves points
 
And then retiming? A brief explanation if possible please?
Also what gap size should I be setting for the points?

have you access to a strobe light ?turn engine over to tdc on firing stroke number 1 cylinder ,you watch valves to be sure which stroke piston is on firing stroke no1 valves will both be shut no4 both valves will both be partially open set dizzy till rotor arm is at no1 lead in the cap ,if you have strobe adjust to 6 degrees btdc whilst idling high ligthing crank pulley mark will help white paint tipex etc
 
No I don't have access to a timing light, I could perhaps ask my old boss if he will lend me his. Is there another way?

As a rough guide ya can conect a buzzer or bulb to the points. turn engine over slowly. It will beep/light up when the points make contact. Then check the position of the timing marks. That way will give you a rough idea of where you are. then refit distributor cap and fire it up.

Bought a new battery today 800cca and 78ah for £65, thanks to a very generous bloke sticking a different price to it.
 
Went back to her today, put my new battery in, flung over lovely. Winged it over for a minute, checked the fuel was flowing tried again and she coughed into life. Runs like a dream, didn't miss a beat.


Only trouble now, I turned the wheel and heard a funny noise opened the bonnet and PSF is everywhere. Absolutely pi**ing out of the pipe above the box.
