Hi guys recently bought a series 1 88" with a v8 for restoration,
First question, does anyone want the conversion ring for their series
Second question, will a series 3 2.25 petrol engine fit the series 1 box ? Is it worth changing to a s3 gear box ? Is that a direct swap ?

If I fit 2.25 petrol,
How much will value drop ?
Can I get a reproduction series 1 radiator ?

Finally iv had a weird idea of blanking of 2.25 petrol exhaust port and machining one on side face of manifold so I can have a out the wing original exhaust ?

Why do you want a 2.25 if you have a v8? They have the same mpg, but guess which one has more power !
Also on the gearbox front, I think the series 3 are susposed to be easiest to drive(synchro on all gears) but they are usually accepted as not being reliabe, the 2a box only has synchro in 3 and 4th and is much stronger

How much would you like for the conversion ring...I'm thinking about trying a v8 in my 109...

However, I'm a fan of the 2.25 tuned up they go pretty well and can be made more efficient with a newer carb and skimmed head. If you're going to use it a lot I'd recommend looking at the ACR performance stuff I get 20mpg racing round the Pennines and 28-30mpg on motorways and at good speed. The 2.25 can also be bored out quite a lot for a bit more power.

As to gearboxes James Martin the gearbox expert reckons that Series III ones are strongest but has to be right suffix - I'm sure he did a post about it recently but I can't find it...

Yeah he dd say people are a bit misguided in saying the series 2 boxes are strongest. Series 3 boxes arent all bad if the synchros are in good condition. I think the main problem with them is just the crudeness of the synchro setup.

if you can find a proper s1 2l petrol and put that it it might be worth more than having a 2.25 in it, can't remember if the 2.25 was a stock engine for an 88 s1

and you can have s3 gears put in an s1 box to get full synchro, couple more things to think about :D

not sure there would be any difference in value of a v8 s1 and a 2.25 s1 both would be significantly less than a 2l s1 imho. and if you can get the right engine s1's seem to be increasing in value quite well now.

Rocking horse poo for a series 1 two litre though ? Yeh ok so syncros will be useful, and then the series one box will be worth a bit to sell on ?

My acquaintance has a series one 88 1955, he used a 60's or 70's saloon engine in his same layout but one mount got trimed he said, currently he is away that's on a series 1 box

sorry I meant to add he brought that off his uncle just months ago and still paid over 3800. promise one thing if you please, don't go td or tdi or even n/a also the s2 box is so much stronger as its minus the stupid sync crap
