had a loud clonking noise from the bottom end. removed sump and found a spun big end on no. 4. crank beyond repair. motor out, took off the timing gear cover expecting to see a chain and saw this.

What the hell is it.

there was an aftermarket option of replacing the chain with gears iirc. zeus engineering . about 1k when they came out, don't think many people liked them tbh, they had issues.

diesel has timing gears not chain, petrol had timing chain

+1 on the Zeus conversion. They all had timing chains, but even at that there was little take-up on the conversion as it was very noisy and there were some quality issues with the gears IIRC (this was a good long while back, so memory fuzzy).

I'd hang onto them if you didn't find them objectionable you might want to refit.
