just though i would evaluate my 8 years of owning a 2001 td4 freelander, 120k ,( replacement engine fitted this year)

on the whole it has been a very reliable car, although i would never recommend owning one unless you have the skills or deep pockets to keep it maintained , otherwise it would have cost me a small fortune if it had to go to a garage ,

here is a list of faults and work that i have done , to this day it looks like new and drives fantastic especially with the synergy 2 fitted, a very capable car in all weathers, always passes the yearly mot and has only let me down once

year 1 , rear diff mounting bush £17
year 2, tyres all round goodyear wranglers £300
year 3, replacement front brake pads £40
year 4,turbo hose,& pcv valve filter £30
year 5,replaced all 4 injectors £400
year 6,replaced tyres good year wranglers £300
year 7, replaced the clutch due to oil seal leak £200
rear diff mounting bush £20
year 8, replacement engine due to snapped crankshaft £550

annual service oil and filters approx £100 x 8 £800

every year i do get underneath and spray the chassis with a little bit of oil, and that keeps any rust at bay, ,

other niggles:-(no cost)
1 drivers door window regulator cable corroded - replaced with old bicycle brake cable
2 sunroof jammed- cable end clamp snapped/ repaired,
3, water in cubby hole,- rear door seal altered to allow water to drain to outside
4, water coming through roof at rear, due to corrosion of trim mounting bracket, ,, reattached using silicone sealant

there may be a few other minor things i havent mentioned but thats about it

original cost £11 k
estimated value today £3k = 8k depreciation

so all in all running costs per year including depreciation is about £1,300 :D

so really im quite pleased, and intend to keep the freelander for as long as its viable,

whats yours costing you ?

a merry xmas and happy new year to you all, hope our your troubles a little ones :)

Hi John,

Mine has this problem (not the corrosion, just the leak) - where did you add the sealant just out of interest?

So John, apart from the handle and the brush its still the original broom:) I've sent a small fortune on mine over 4 years and 50k (120k total) miles but no regrets and no new engine or HGF as yet!

sijwhite ,,,, the leak from the roof , was caused by the rotting metal that is used to fix the black trim above the back door, , i had to carefully remove the black trim, side pannels too and this revealed a rotten galvanized fixing bracket, the screws holding the bracket in place allowed water into the car at the roof level, as the bracket was totaly rotten , i simply sealed the screw holes, and reattached the black trim with silicone sealant, job done , no leaks

my old td4 a 2001 auto was a great car just had the following vcu and auto box and brakes, but in the end it had a water leek and i could not find it i took it in to Landrover in Enniskillen in Ireland, and they could not find it so i decieded to replace all hoses ,I went in to order them and came out with a 2006 td4 auto HSE, so never found out where the water was coming from ,But i did suspect the metal tubes behind the engin ,Do i miss the old girl ? YES i reply as i had the car for 8 years going into 9 years ,but do i like the new one answer is YES again but plan next year to probably change the wheels those 225 55 17 do not look the part.
