More of the same today, just stripping crap and underseal off the chassis . Still surprised that nuts bolts and screws are coming out easy enough. Main brake pipe looks like its original factory, given that its buried in underseal which is part of the stuff on the chassis .. even the pipe nuts came out of the wheel cylinders . Ive rebuilt stuff that come from the USA that didnt give up as easy as this ..

Hi, just been reading through, your making fast progress, good on you! Just to hopefully put you at ease regarding your v5, the previous owner of my series 2a said he sent the v5 off in feb when I got the landy, however I never received and I actually sent off For a new one and paid the £25 about august time after not getting anywhere with dvla during lock down etc, it still took a further few weeks to come through! Good luck.
 
Thanks for your reply. I kind of guessed that the DVLA might be on a go slow.. I sold a model A coupe about 8 weeks ago. I did the transfer on line and the fella I sold the car to got the V5 through in hs name within the week .. probably untouched by human hand .

The fella I bought the landy from said he had posted the V5 to DVLA it was only a week ago and to be honest they do say 10 to 14 days .. A real rookie error buying without getting the reference off the document or indeed the chassis number on the document to cross refer with the numbers on the vehicle in my haste to secure a project vehicle I must have had my blinkers on that day..

It’s easy enough to get carried away! I was the same, you have a look at a few then get worried you’ll miss out on a decent project, before you know it you’ve bought it! I see your in Scotland too, I was lucky I got mine in Perth only an hour away from me, saved me travelling too far!
 
Mine came from the midlands area, all the way to Angus .. I couldnt find anything up here that ticked all the boxes . I have to admit this one didnt meet all the requirements either, but the bones of it looked pretty good and although not cheap it was comparable to similar projects the price range and included the transport that I had been quoted around £750 for similar projects in and around that area .. The seller had a buddy travelling up to Scotland to deliver some boat trailers to Glasgow with an empty flatbed truck . Just so happened to be within the next few days of the offer , a nudge to a purchase . lol.. Im gonna carry on with the cleanup and chassis repairs and restrict the spending until the V5 comes through. Whats the worst thing that can happen . :confused:
 
yet more of the same , scraping and cleaning , uncovered a couple of small areas that need attention but nothing terminal. cleaning up the front X member I uncovered an orange sticker , no writing on it , just a square paper sticker ..Does anybody know if this is some factory identifier ?

Front axle looks really good from a cosmetic perspective . no heavy pitting it also had a deliberate brush stroke of blue paint on the left side close to the inside U bolt . Any significance why that should be there , looked factory.

had a few visitors pass through today so never got on quite as quick . Nipping out later to template the rear chassis extensions to replace the mess that's there just now..

Took a few more pics , nothing to show really just progress on the chassis clean up and a few areas of corrosion .

Im pretty sure the main brake pipe front to rear was original factory buried under the underseal.. great for routing detail and factory bend reference ..

speaking of brake pipes, the axle pipe came off no problem , even the 8mm( or imperial equivalent) bolts securing the pipes to the rear axle brackets came out without a fight ..

I wish I knew the history of this old Landrover .. It certainly doesnt appear to have lead a hard life . Speedo shows 92000..

Also stripped the front wings getting rid of the big flares and replacing with standard outer wing panels .. and reducing the junk generated by the tear down.. I dont have space to keep stuff I wont be using, likewise, if its past its best no point hanging onto it for resale , If its flat and easy to store I will hang onto it, if its worn out, its straight in the scrap bin ( the back of the X trail ) there seems to be tons of this land rover stuff out there :)

Unsure if your loom is inside the chassis.
This runs front/back on O/S.
Thought I better say before you start chopping
 
The loom does indeed run through the chassis, up the right leg, Rear tub wiring was a mess so lopped the loom and will re wire with a plug when the time comes :)

Making great progress, I stripped my loom out of chassis leg when I replaced the rear half chassis, I plan on putting some extra fuses in mine next week in the passenger underseat tool box then repacking with new cabling from there to the rear. Your chassis doesn’t look too bad at all! Doing well!
 
Made up some templates for the re do of the rear X member . Shoul get the material cut on tuesday and a start made to sorting whats currently there .. Doing another job for my buddy so a wee bit less time that expected this week.. but should still see some progress ..

Rear shox arrived today, A pair of good quality woodheads .. £30 delivered from ebay ..

No sign of new tyres yet .. Might throw the rims in to the blasters to get a flash over and get the tyres fitted to save space ..
 
Chased up the tyres today , there at the delivery depot ( Tufnels) they couldnt find my address so took them back to the depot , that was last Thursday ... If I didnt contact the seller today, would have been waiting for a while yet ..LOL

Contacted the fella I bought the landy from re the V5 , Glad I did as he forgot to send it, so did it online there and then while I was on the phone . Got an e mail for DVLA to confirm notification so fingers crossed thats that wee side issue sorted .

Made up the repair sections and some replace ment outriggers from 2mm plate .. hope to get those seen to on Wednesday /Thursday.
The chap I got the replacements wings from has had a look through his stash and uncovered a grille, free wheel hubs, steering wheel, and a few other odds and ends I was looking for .. so plan to head over that way next week some time .

Onwards and upwards .. :)
 
Tyres arrived , no real need for them straight away but I had the cash and its the biggest single outlay so got that purchase out of the way. ordered up the rear brake parts, like the brakes on my cars to work so disregarded the budget cylinders and shoes and went for Mintex shoes and better cylinders .. Probably the same as the cheep ones but at least in my mind they will be decent :) Trimmed the dodgy repairs off the rear crossmember , got a few measurements to check before committing to re doing the rear section of chassis , but have the repair sections made up.. Chopped off a couple of the bad outriggers and trimmed a section of chassis behind the outrigger . Hidden rust , better cut out than ignored . but im thinking that before I weld in the repair section I will give the box section another good pressure washing to get some residue out of the void. A big hole for access will be a wee bonus.. Another wee bonus is the amount of black paint still inside the frame , Its gonna fix up nice and be sound for years to come ..

Under the outrigger there was a bit of additional corrosion, something that might have been missed if I chose to carry out localised repairs to the original outriggers. , Also chopped out most of the bad repairs to the rear chassis extension, leaving enough there to maintain the position of the rear X member for now , but despite this , im going to check some measurements before I commence with the repair. and cut the rest of the dross away.

Working on my buddies hot rod replacing the rear axle with a Quick Change rear end .. lots of fabrication and changing stuff, but going well so far ..

Just had an hour of so to spend on the landy so chopped out the rot from the other side of the chassis ( same location under the out rigger) , had a good lookat the frame and decided that having it blasted would be a good idea. Its to good not to give it the best chance of longevity .. the blasting is a good key for primer and paint .

Will get the wheels and axles done at the same time .. Will have to get my finger out before we decend into another lock down .. :(
 
New doors arrived .. cant believe they can do these for £85 each seems reasonable and look quite decent , no dips or waves in the outer skin and the frame looks to be welded up properly with tidy welds all round . Definitely beats messing around with banged up rotten doors and saves loads of time .. They came from ebay buying the pair was a little cheaper than buying individually. I did ask the seller if they would do a discount for a pair and they created the listing with the discount. Was just £5 but that pretty much paid for a rear brake flexi.. :) Every little helps . Doors were Bearmarch brand . ( that might not be the proper spelling )

Good progress again Ian! Doors sound decent! I toyed with the idea of replacing mine but opted to keep originals for the time being. Every little helps right enough, I started off well then sort of went off track towards the end with all the small things adding up!
 
gave the chassis another power wash, getting into the box section through the areas cut out to repair the rust.. While the power washer was hooked up did the panels I will be re using and cleaned out the rad until it eventually run clear .. Cleaned out the garage, went to tig the new out riggers together and th bloody tig wouldnt work so spent the next couple of hours trying to work out what was wrong with it. Narrowed it down to the micro switch in the torch since the gas solenoid was working constantly releasing gas and the current was switched over as though the switch was being depressed .. Ordered a new micro switch and a couple of pairs of tig gloves .. After having a couple of skin cancers dug out Im a wee bit more care full with the PPE these days .. :) We always shut the door when the horse has bolted .. be careful out there :) . The big news of the day , The V5 dropped through the door .. so its game on.. mintex brake shoes also arrived.

In reality, not much in the way of progress mostly preparation, but now I have the V5 Im more confident with moving forward with the restoration.. Im not anticipating to many problems, ( jinxed that now ) but if I get a few parts collected progress should be pretty steady .. when I get a chance to spend some decent time on it .
