Aye. I remember driving a Magirus-Deutz bonnetted 6x4 tipper and all it wanted to do at T-junctions was go straight across..
Anyhoo..... mibees do ye think I should extend a LWB rather than a SWB?

Might be a good idea. In the days when a minimum wheelbase length was legally required in order for the truck to gross 22tons I drove a AEC LWB tipper that conformed to the regulations & didn't seem to suffer from the 'push-ahead' trait. The downside was an increased turning circle, but you pays 'yer money .....

Dan,
not looking for a donor 6x6. Just advice on which model (or models) would serve the best/easiest.
Well you've said you don't care about the body....

So I have to ask, do you know what a Land Rover chassis looks like? Because honestly, once you take the body off, there isn't a whole heap of difference between any of them. Defender's are a bit beefier in the middle and the body mounting points are different. But that's about it. If you don't care at this stage what body you want, then I'm not really sure what you are really wanting as an answer.

Are you looking to do the work yourself? Have you don't anything like this before? I see you are a new poster here and on LR4x4 where you have a duplicate thread, although you've not responded over there.

Do you have a budget in mind?

If you don't care about the looks, then surely budget plays a big part in this. A donor Discovery could cost you £300-800. But a donor 110 or 130 might set you back £5000.

You also seem determined to CREATE not buy as you said earlier. Any reason? The only reason I can think of is that you want something very very specific in the design. But it seems you have no actual design yet....

Which is a little puzzling.

The simplest way is like the guys that build em do(Foley SV) , start with defender chassis cut it behind the spring mount and extend 40 inches on the extension is the extended down mounts mounts for the 3rd axle .

you will probably need engineers report on structural strength etc . The vehicle to be usable will also probably come into LGV testing regime ,eg plating regs
ps you will also need deep pockets

Dan,
I'm familiar with Land Rover chassis; but I'm not the kind of guy who's had umpteen LRs and spends every weekend under one hence I'm asking you "experts" what model(s) you would suggest. It would be great to hear from anyone who's done this before.
I do intend to do the work myself.
I've not done it before.
"Creating" is more fun than buying.

Then I suspect drawing up some ideas on what you want the vehicle to be and achieve plus budget, will help get better and more focused replies.

Total length, wheelbase, intended use. These are all good things to consider up front. And I think how it looks is also a consideration, why faff about getting additional body parts and fabbing up more outriggers if you don't need too.

I suspect with any LR chassis less than 127", then you'd add the 3rd axle behind the existing one. On a 127/130 then I guess there is the option to add the 3rd axle either side of the existing on.

This is assuming you are wanting twin axles at the rear. As has been suggested here and LR4x4, you could have a twin axle at the front or an axle in the middle, for an alternative 6 wheeler layout.

And as I said earlier, the cost of the donor can be quite different. 10x difference if you go from a D1 to a 130.

Twin-steer? Rear-steer? Chinese-six? Even 8x8? All interesting ideas but probably just muddying the water too much for this first project.

[QUOTE="tacr2man, post: 3629672, member: 10821] extend 40 inches on the extension is the extended down mounts mounts for the 3rd axle .
ALA the TACR variations

This thread seems to be going in circles , it seems you say you dont know and need advice , and then a lot has been suggested , but doesnt seem to register , in the end you need to set some definite parameters , or its going no where , which is probably what it will end in anyway

Bit off topic.... but back when we all had hair a mate 1976 ish of mine was fixing up a Morris 1000 pick up, as the chassis was rotten behind the cab he blagged a couple of long bits of box section steel to fabricate some new sections' slotted them inside the existing chassis . discussing where to cut them off his brother in law popped in took one look and said "you could get another axle under there"
Few weeks later a six wheel pick up was up and running with a Riley 1.5 motor and twin leading shoe brakes .
We had loads of fun that summer hooning round the Welsh coast .

would it not be easier to find a carmichael and drop whatever top you want on it? one sold on ebay for £4600 the other week.. eBay item number: 172002782717
All the engineering etc would already be sorted and registered then you'd just need to change the body then you could make it look like this

and have you seen .....http://www.thesixappealwheelgroup.org/
