Hi,
I currently drive a manual and I'm looking at getting a LR3 discovery. I notice a lot of them are in automatic. Why is this? What's it like to have a LR in manual?

Go for the ZF 6 speed auto. I've got one in my S-type v8 and it really is a beaut!

If you want to drive it manually you can, but I bet you don't do it after the first couple of days!!

This is a much newer generation of auto where you get 'drive' straight away - no horrible Torque Converter losses.

Autos are now so called "clutch less " you can still drive as a manual but with out the clutch peddle or if you wish in fully auto mode.
My other weekend car has this method to selecting any of the 8 gears, similar to the latest Land Rovers I believe.

I just leave it in auto. :)

once you have driven a automatic you will like it. Me Doris who is brit loves autos here in the states and won't go back to a stick shift. father inlaw (83) just bought a new car with auto for the first time and loves it. Auto will do anything a stick shift will do, even a little better maybe.

Except in ice.

have to disagree with you on that. easier to feather the throttle with auto than clutch. plus a standard can slow you down to fast with engine compression, causing a loss of traction.

That is why on lorry's with a compression/jake break they have a warning to turn off in icey/slipper roads

Never had a problem with snow or ice and why would I want to push start, or require jumper cables? how embarrassing to do all that. I'd just call the RAC :p

But I've been there, in the good old back in the black & white days of the 1960s :D

I drive a manual disco 3 and love it! I tried the auto and a manual before deciding and went for the manual. i had an auto shogun sport before and hated towing with it. I hate that momentary delay between pressing the throttle and it doing anything cos its changing down. I prefer manual and will stick to them. I know it has issues regarding eating clutches but i dont mind getting my hands dirty.
At the end of the day go try an auto and a manual then make up your on mind.
