Hi Guys,

Quite new to the site - thought I would give the heads up on my current project which is nearing completion.

had a tired old 90 with a spectacular TVR lump in it and a nasty old 3-speed Auto. Chassis Knackered so decided to rebuild on new Richards one - then I saw an Overfinch Discovery Mk 1 on ebay so I bought that with the intention of building a hybrid with both vehicles - as ever it turns out the Disco was knackered so I have rebuilt the 5.7 chevy engine with an eagle 383stoker kit and total edelbrock top end with big valve heads, 600 carb, roller rockers etc.

I sold the TVR engine to my mate who mated it to a santana 5-speed and it suits his landy well - he had to uprate his axles and brakes, but it goes like stink.

On the Dyno the chevy 6.3 made 380bhp and 450lbs torque.

I then had Ashcroft build me a Stage 2 auto and fitted a huge torque convertor, for which we had to make a new boss and adaptor - turns out Overfinch only ever used the medium V8 convertor so most of the torque was lost anyway! I also had them rebuild the 1.2 ratio transfer box.

I have also fitted a front ale from a RRC so I can have vented discs now and the car is being totally rebuilt.

I have detailed some images below

I had all the work done on the disco and then ran it for a month to make sure it was all fine before commencing the build - by god it is fast!

I know it is a shame to scrap the Disco as it was quite solid but they aren't worth anywhere near as much as Overfinch Rangies and I think it has sacrificed itself for a good cause

These show the disco body coming off the chassis, the new 90 chassis - all the overfinch mounts/adaptors etc fitted perfectly, but the suspension and brakes were tired so I have had all new stuff.

We are painting it Keswick Green and turning it back to a station wagon together with a rollcage from a 50th and interior from a Puma XS.

The suspension has a 30mm lowering and I have transferred all the anti-roll bars etc from the disco.

The overfinch headers were knackered so I got some ceramic chevy blazer headers from the US and these fit with a bit of fettling.

Should be finished at the end of the month.

Thought you guys might also like the little 3.5 Rover below - built by the same guy who built my 6.3 stroker.

The rover has stage 4 heads, twin-choke downdraught webers and a Piper 285 cam - makes over 300bhp at 7000rpm - obviously not going in a Landrover but into an MGB GT racer.

That would be my good friend eliott's website.

The guy who built the engine does just that - horses for courses.

He builds race engines and dragster engines for all the top guys at santa pod.

one of the limiting factors is the amount of revs - by balancing the motor internally and lightening everything it will rev much higher and faster - the limiting factor is then the fuel - hence the quadruple carbs giving, in effect a choke for each cylinder. This engine will rev to 8000 quite safely because of the lightweight internals.
 
Awesome job lol! Sounds like a awesome build list there mate - remember hearing a 350 with stocker kit etc on a 4x4 Bronco thing couple of years ago...Made the ground thump, my knees wobble but didnt seem antisocialy loud either!!! Personally, lowering a defender seems slightly backward but they do look just as good once there lowered - if not better!

I know its not the point but what sort of MPG are you expecting? Im presuming its not your daily driver lol

Yep ground will be a shakin' - I haven't decided whether to go for twin exhausts - one for each bank of cylinders - in 2.5 inch or to have a Y-piece and go out in a single 3.5 inch.

Even with the very quiet Overfinch exhaust in the disco it sounded very deep and potent...

MPG is not my concern - although around 12 in town was achieved when I was running this motor and gearbox in the donor disco - I also made one trip to Bristol and back and it averaged over 20 - should be a bit better in the defender with the lighter weight.

I am lowering the car purely to improve the on-road handling - I won't be doing any off-roading!

I have a 14-inch Edelbrock air cleaner in matt black matching the rocker covers which will be fitted in the defender - it didn't fit under the disco bonnet.

F00k me - Thats better MPG than my "Punie" rover 3.9 V8 haha ! Imagine that engine on LPG lol - be very affordable then!

Good luck any way mate - make sure you get loads of piccies! Very interested in doing something like this once ive got a 2nd car to do the comute in!!!

Willy - when I was driving the disco with the standard chevy 5.7 in - i.e before I stroked it to 6.3 - it was even better on fuel.

I originally built the top end with all the edelbrock heads, inlet, cam, carb etc but then found that with this nice new tight top end the shells started to rattle - I then decided to get the stroker kit done rather than just rebore the 5.7.

The full spec of the engine is now as follows:

Chevy small block L98 4-bolt mains with single piece rear seal
Overbored 0.030 and fitted with Eagle forged 383 crank and Keith Black pistons giving 6.3 litres
Edelbrock E-tec aluminium big valve heads
Edelbrock performer inlet manifold
Edelbrock Performer Plus camshaft
Edelbrock 1.5 ratio roller rockers
ARP bolts throughout
Flowtech Ceramic Headers
Cloyes Double timing chain
Edelbrock 600 4-barrel carb - I may up-rate this to a 750 in the future.

The engine was built for torque rather than power.

Overfinch always sold the conversion as being more fuel efficient than the 3.9 or 4.6 as the engine found it much easier to haul the big Discos and Rangies around.

I want to hear this roar ! :D for the exhaust I'm I'm sure 4-2-1 down pipes create the best sound and power, you can do whatever you want with it after that its the mixing of the vibrations in the single pipe that crates the lovely rumble :)
 
Just a quick update lads - no pics I'm afraid. Monday 7th at lunchtime

All the brake lines etc are in as is the wiring loom
front wings etc are in primer ready for paint
prop shafts from disco fit perfectly - a total bonus

Will report later in the week
 
Hi guys - pics below of my other V8 Landrover - my mint 1997 Disco 1 ES7 Auto.

Jap spec import only done 70000 miles and waxoyled from new.

Probably one of the very best still going - chassis and floor like new.

LPG fitted with underslung tanks.

When I bought it it had a slipped liner on no5 cylinder so I decided it was in such good condition it was worth a new engine.

Did work as follows -

Short engine with Top hat liners from Turner Engineering
Kent H180 Sports Torque camshaft
ACT trumpets and inlet polish with K&N filter
Light skim and check heads
Tornado ECU upgrade.
Full stainless branches and sports exhaust with wrap for manifolds
New De Carbon shocks and uprated springs

Spent 5 grand all together!!! on a 97 Disco!

but she drives lovely and is very smooth and powerful.

On lpg goes like a normal 3.9 and on petrol like a 4.6!!!.

Will be available soon if anyone interested

Anyway - onwards and upwards
