Morning All

My TD5 has developed a whine in 5th gear, just 5th gear and it's only discernible above 40mph. All the other gears are fine, and there are no real issues changing in to or out of any gears.
The box has done almost 130k miles and I'm considering replacing the entire box with a recon from Ashcroft. One of the issues is that there's no-one on the Island that can do a gearbox repair that I trust, so I'm thinking that just replacing the entire unit might be the easiest option, rather than go to the trouble of fixing this issue, only for another one to arise shortly afterwards.

Anyway, my question is, if I've only just started to hear this whine, is it causing any issues by continuing to drive it, or do I really need to do something about it sooner rather than later?

you could check oil and change it if not done recently ,but if its a worn 5th gear pair which it sounds like then youve a bit of time before it gets noticeably worse

Thanks James. I did a complete oil change about 6 months, and it's been fine up until a few days ago.

Edit: I've emailed Ashcroft just to see what the return carriage cost would be over to the Isle of Man... can't wait for the response!

You fitting it yourself or getting it done in the garage?

If the garage then make a holiday of it, come over on to the main land an get the local approved by Ashcrofts to do it for you ;) no carriage and a holiday to boot :)

It's well beyond my capabilities, so I'd be getting my local garage to do it for me.
I did think that it might be cheaper to bring to car to the mainland and have a holiday at the same time, so that's still an option. I notice that Ashcrofts website says they can't do return delivery outside the UK, but I'll see what they reply to my email with before I book any ferries and hotels ;)

Hi I would recommend changing the oil as James Martin mentioned, but using the oil Ashcroft recommend

Ashcrofts can't deliver/collect the gearbox to the Isle of Man, but they've suggested that Gibsons of Kendal might be able to help, so I've dropped them an email.

Whilst glancing through December's copy of Land Rover Owner earlier today I spotted this query which does appear support using ATF for the earlier boxes....

Question : I’m a little confused. I have a
Disco 300Tdi with the R380
manual gearbox and my Haynes
manual says to use Dexron IID ATF oil.
My Disco Td5 also has a R380 manual
gearbox and Haynes says to use Texaco
MTF94 transmission oil. Why diferent
oil for the same gearbox?

Answer : MTF94 has been developed for
higher torque/power applications
to protect the gears and bearings.
It has improved performance at extreme
temperatures and was specified by Land
Rover for the more powerful Td5 vehicle.
I would recommend that you stick to using
ATF in your gearbox.

Thats just a typical answer from those at LRO. :(

Its a question that often appears, and the story back at the time when the R380 was introduced in 1994 with a change over from LT77 to the R380 for the D1 was that MTF94 was the oil designed for R380 and similar gearboxes, but then LR forgot to rewrite the spec in their manuals at the time.

ATF has been use in the R380 gearbox coupled to a V8 engine for many years without any known issues, and with more power than the Td5 .

never heard that at the time, atf was the oil the r380 as supposed to use so they told us
the diesel is much harsher than a v8, youd see far more diesel boxes than v8s at a rebuilders

Yes the chap that runs buckley gearbox and transmissions flintshire did tell me he v8 disco boxes rarely find there way in to his workshop.
then something about drilling holes in early disco td box cogs, oil starvation lost me on that one.
my 94 v8 worked hard, no gbox issues,

So really, when you factor in the cost of a gearbox against fuel costs, overall, it's probably no cheaper to run a diesel than a V8...

Looks like I'll be combining an 'oliday with getting my gearbox replaced with an Ashcrofts one.
If I remove the hotel and ferry costs, it'll be cheaper than getting the box shipped over 'ere to be fitted and then shipping the old one back to Ashcrofts.

Is it worth the extra cost of getting the heavy duty rear bearing at almost a quarter the price of the gearbox itself?
