Chaps - as mentioned briefly in an update to my last thread, after I replaced my dead LT230 with a good used one, it's really difficult to get into gear when changing to 5th or reverse. It feels as if there's a bit of sponge/foam/some other shite wedged in the way and the gear lever needs a bit more pressure to get into gear.

As I only replaced the transfer box and didn't touch the main gearbox I can't see how this has made any difference - any ideas?

The old LT230 and current R380 are from a 1996, and there's wear on the output shaft of the R380, but none at all on the donor transfer box and gearbox shaft (should have also put that in, but didn't have time!), so would that cause an issue?

Check the layshaft extension ...
 
Well I've had a cursory google looking for info on how to check the layshaft extension, but all I've found seems to be:
'Why can't I select 5th & reverse? - well your layshaft extension has sheared and you need a new gearbox...' :eek:


What!

Can anyone advise how I go about checking the layshaft extension please before it dies completely, as it's currently working but very stiff ....and yes, I do wish I had that problem all the time, just not on my landy! ;)
 
Hmm... Reading around a bit more and thinking back to the 'incident' when the transfer box imploded I think it probably has caused the gearbox problem, as the transfer box seized pretty solid as I was driving at about 35.

Or, maybe it was the gearbox layshaft death that triggered the implosion of the transfer box!? Hmm... The plot thickens!

I think I might cry if I have to swap the bastid gearbox over as well... I've got no time, work up to my eyeballs and supposedly a weeks family holiday in Cornwall coming up if I can get there :(
 
Firstly I know nothing about the r380 box as my D1 is an earlier 200tdi with lt77 box but....

Can you remove the box drain & / or
The oil filter thing to acces the lay shaft at rear / 5th gear? If so can you 'poke' a screwdriver or finger (dynamite??) in to see if there's excessive looseness or maybe even loose / spare bits? o_O

And if it helps, I've changed my '91 200's gearbox & transfer box as a single unit on floor / no ramps so understand your reluctance to play that game :D

more of an issue with your clutch than the t/box
