Handbrake made a huge screeching sound and won’t disengage - EPB fault indicated.

Following some advice, I tried releasing with the cable - no luck. Then used my iCarsoft to unjam/engage/release - it makes noises but won’t release.

I can’t get the discs off or turn the wheels to the adjuster position. Does this mean it’s the module, and I have to cut the cables?
 
I would hazard a guess the shoes needing adjusting (annual job) the epb module overstroked (the screech) and has now jammed/stripped the gears.
You can get the bits to repair the inside of the mudule as a kit on ebay.

If that fails I would not cut cables as they are bloody dear, angle grinder with thin slitting discs and cut the brake discs in two being very careful of the hub and the backplate.
I have read you need a screwdriver or short bar through the release cable end so you can use both hands to pull the emergency release cable, not tried it myself.

It's best cut the disc off in preference to cutting the cables.
The disc is a wearable component anyway, so is much cheaper and easier to deal with. Once the discs are off and the tension released, you have a chance at pushing the cables onwards, which may allow the EPB module to be reset. ;)
 
Thanks - turns out I wasn’t pulling hard enough on the release cable! It needs a real heave but I didn’t want to break anything.

Brakes are released, and I’ve taken the EPB fuse out. The MoT is booked for this week, so I might have to give in and take it in to the local 4x4 place. Unlikely I’ll get spares in time to repair it myself.

Can this be done with an icarsoft i930? In the service menu, it has something about mount/disengage/unjam. Or is it part of the main diagnostic menu?

I’ve looked up adjusting the brake shoes, so will do that before anything else.

I don't know, but the I930 does a fair bit on the later LRs.

You can't get to the adjuster, unless you can turn the rotor so the adjuster hole lines up shoe adjuster.
 
I think it’s sorted.

As I said before I pulled a bit harder on the emergency release and it popped free. I left the EPB fuse out overnight. Replaced it this morning and used the iCarsoft i930:

Service menu —> EPB —> drive to latching position. Nothing much happened.
Service menu —> EPB —> unjam. It made a normal handbrake noise.

Stripped and cleaned the mechanisms on both sides - all adjusters were at minimum so no-one had set the brakes properly, even though it’s been serviced at a ‘good’ LR independent before I had it (only had it 2 months).

Handbrake appears to be working again. ;)

The I930 really is worth it's comparatively tiny cost.

My D3 was the same, although mine was always serviced by the main dealer. You wouldn't believe the number of bodges and general poor workmanship I had to deal with in the first few months of ownership.
