hi i have a 56 freelander 54 000 miles td4. When starting cold and using plugs it starts ok but is slightly lumpy for a short time, when warm starting and no plugs intemittantly it is a very weak start and if you feather the throttle to get it going it stalls sometimes it takes several attempts to get it going and when it goes it chucks out a cloud of blue smoke an misses badly for about 30 secs. Ocasionaly the car seems to be struggling for power especialy when pulling out of junctions it feels like its going to stall so the clutch has to be dipped to build some revs up. It has been to the garage as it brought the engine light on saying fuel pressure and when it did this it lost all power when driving, the sensor has been replaced and there was also a split turbo pipe replaced on the third time going back it got sent to a diesel specialist apparently they did something with the egr and tested injectors still the same problem. Only had it 3 weeks and we really do like it and it took a while to find one in this condition and low mileage so any pointers with what is wrong will be appreciated as i suspect the garage may be stringing it out till the warranty expires this problem must have been with the vehicle when we bought it.
 
Most common is the fuel rail pressure sensor did u buy new or second hand as a new one from main stealers only comes with a new rail and has a modified wiring loom
 
As far as im aware they fitted a new one when i took it back i waited while they ran a diagnostic which said it was the sensor but didnt have time to wait for the part to arrive so i left it with them and collected it later.
 
Mine was similar to this when i bought it, turned out to be dodgy injectors, but they replaced half the engine bay too while trying to fix it, new maf sensor etc
 
Blue smoke - indication of oil in the combustion chamber

If that is the case you are looking at a head gasket or a crack in your cylinder head/block allowing oil in. Check your oil to see if it has moisture in (mixes with coolant to create a mayonnaise like substance) and the level.

Surprised if it is the fuel rail sensor causing that.
 
Thanks the head gasket is fine no cross contamination of fluids and pressure test came back fine. When it does it it sounds really flat then it bursts into life the blue smoke seems to point towards low fuel pressure hence the pressure fault it registered, could it be the fault registered due to low fuel pressure and not the faulty sensor? Reading through other issues this could be down to a failing primary fuel pump, when it is driving it is fine apart from it dying and bringing the engine management light on which pointed to the sensor. It has not done this again yet. Thanks for continued suggestions.
 
Question for anybody, does the electric fuel pump on a freelander run constantly as when you turn ignition on it runs and doesn't stop, could this be due to it not reaching the correct pressure to knock it off or is this how they are?

have no idea of value 'x' .. nor do i know what triggers shutdown ..
possibly a timer in the ecu ..

with engine running .. pump is constantly operating ..

on the m47r / td4 .. also a clogged crankcase breather will cause blue smoke ..

" CLOGGED PCV VALVE - can cause erratic idle and stalling, as well as blue smoke from the exhaust. "

am assuming the turbo oil gets into the exhaust 'cause the crankcase pressure doesn't let it drain into the sump ..
as it normaly should do ..

also valve oil seals will cause blue smoke on start up but should not be on a low mileage engine . your has the air sensor on the short bit of turbo hose take the plug off and spray both connectors with switch cleaner and see if that does it.
td4 engine faults :
 
I will give it a try during valeting the engine bay was jet washed so there could be water in the connections i will clean as many as i can and see what happens. the dealer assures me it wasnt sold to him like this as he knows the previous owner. It is booked in at a local landy specialist on monday they seem to think it will be a injector fault from the symptoms a blocked PCV valve could also be an issue causing a vaccume in the breather system when the engine has cooled a couple of hours but is unlikely. I cant fault the dealer at all his customer service is second to none and he will be picking up the bill.
 
Now sorted was a sticking injector solenoid dumping all fuel into 1 cylinder causing low pressure to other cylinders. New injector fitted feels like a different car.
