My free lander 51 reg 2.0 diesel manual as a problem with reverse gear, perfect in all forward gears but in reverse it just grinds really bad.
Thinking of putting another box in and was wondering if say the rover 75 diesel manual gear box would fit or does any body know any other cars that use the same box which would give me more options, also if any body as replaced a free lander box have the any tips or points to bare in mind.
Thank in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Rover 75 box won't fit as it has a different interface instead of attaching to the IRD

Search on clutch replacement and you'll find guides on how to do it

Thanks for that, would it be a option to remove the prop shaft and do away with the four wheel drive option ? would the rover 75 box fit then ?

You'd need different bespoke front drive shafts and gear selectors and all sorts so not worth it in my opinion.

Just get a decent 2nd hand gearbox from a Freelander and replace it - that's what I did when my gearbox had noisy bearings

It's possible but a lot of work for a relatively minor fault. It's not uncommon for the PG1 gearbox to clunk into revers.
First off, check the release lever is free and not siezed. If siezed, lubricate the bushings. Check the slave cylinder bracket for flexing or cracking. Check for play in the gear stick linkage. Change the gearbox oil, making sure that the correct MTF94 oil is used. If those 4 items don't cure the fault, the clutch could be at fault. However the PG1 can still crunch slightly when reverse is selected. Also make sure you are stationary when selecting revers or it will crunch.

Thanks for that, it is not that it crunches when going in, it is more grinding when taking your foot of the clutch,if you take your foot off the clutch very slightly you can get it to reverse all be it very very slow without grinding, let the clutch out more and the grinding is terrible, all forward gears are fine.

Quick question - do you have a Td4 or the Rover L series?

Gearboxes are different

It is the TD4, why i was looking at the rover 75 box the pictures look exactly the same. As i only want the freelander for a bit of a run about funds i want to spend on it are limited and the 75 gearboxes are a lot,lot cheaper than the freelander

Ignore everything I said. You don't have a PG1 Gearbox as you have a TD4
Lesson to self, read the post properly

£50 for the box, plus delivery.

Where in the country are you?

I am in Blackburn Lancashire not so far from Manchester.£50 sounds good for box,it is just what delivery would be.
I take it the box was the box bang on when removed ?
You can PM me with reply if you like thanks for this.

I'll be coming down to Manchester 6th/7th July, if you are not desperate for it...

Would save a big chunk in courier costs

Mike not sure if you are getting my messages, could do to know if we are still on for the morning ? thanks mate

The gear box i thought i had did not happen so i have decided to sell the full freelander it is a 51 reg diesel 200k+ on the clock but the engine runs sweet and as i say drives perfect in all gears going forward, just the reverse gear problem.

It stands me at £400 and i will be happy just to get my money back, paid £300 for it and it cost me £100 to have 2 keys cut and programmed.

If any one is interested let me know or if any one knows somebody who may want it again let me know.

Tried to list it in the classified section but it wont let me !!!!!!!!!!

Any questions just send me a PM thanks.
