I took the old girl on a trip to Sussex n back today. Its the first big trip i have done in her.. I was worried about my flickering oil light n a few other potential problems, but i had no problems at all, and i did the whole 500 mile trip on one tank of fuel.. Just..
Anyone done better in a 200 tdi disco..?
I got to do the trip again next friday, so will try to do better..

I my memory serves me correctly, TDi 200 has an 89ltr tank (19.6galls UK)

So mpg is 500/19.6 = 25.5 mpg.

To be honest mate that doesn't sound very good mpg at all, from a TDi 200.

We ran one for approx 6 yrs and it's mpg was: daily 36; on a run 40 and a best-ever of 46.6mpg.

Does yours have: a roof-rack? Offroad tyres? Wide tyres? What speed do you cruise at on the open road?

Dunno chap.. It cost me about 95 quid to fill it up from almost empty..
I will look at how many litres it takes for the next trip.
I am pleased it did it on one tank, but its done 180k miles now so the economy probably isnt what it used to be..
No mods on mine n running 205 road tyres.. Was driving around 60 mph for the whole trip..

So if you spent £95, how much per litre is diesel round your way? Then we could calculate how many gallons you used to do 500 mls?

Just dug out the fuel reciept.. 67.68L @ £1.389 .. £94.01
I remember i did not fill right up, i filled until the first fuel pump click off. I dunno how much is left in the tank after the fuel light comes on, but i reckon i used the above amount of fuel for the journey..
I dunno what that is in mpg, but it looks better than 25 :0)

Full tank down to just over a 1/4 tank I get around 430 -460 miles from my naturally asthmatic 110, works out at around 29 per gallon, happy with that.
To be honest I think ya doing good, any Landy returning around 30 + average aint bad!
:)

on my 200tdi disco from pretty much empty to the brim would give us 600 miles combined.

I always figured this to be about right, with a 200tdi running well it should return 30mpg and the tank brimmed is about 20gal, 20x30=600.

I say "combined" the majority of trips would be sub 20 miles with a log 'un now and again.

I also found that I would get at least 10% less mpg if I bought the fuel from a supermarket.

Yeah, its sounding better now..
Dorset was looking lovely today.. I love the drive over them hills between dorchester n bridport.

I know i could better 500 miles, but 600 is a bloody good challenge.. I get my fuel from my nearest independent.. Prices usually ok when comparing around.. I try to avoid supermarkets.. I hate queuing..

If you come down to 55 you will get 600 ;)

Sounds good to me..
I went to Sussex to get me children down here for almost a week :)
I have not got too much money saved n what i have is going on a fun week of adventures with me Herberts, so some more saving on the fuel will be good..
55 mph is optimum fuel efficiency speed in a disco then, yes..?

i found my 300tdi disco did 35mpg on mways at 55-60mph. i kept the revs at the point where the turbo was coming strong for peak torque, somewhere around 1750-2000rpm. my 300auto rangey isnt much worse tbh. does 32mpg but it is quicker (70mph) than the disco, but its got an extra intercooler.

Dunno mate, speed costs so the faster you go the more fuel you use, like riding a bike, too high geared and it takes more energy to pedal, change down and its easier to maintain speed.
Gearing up is not always efficient, depends on how fast you are going.

If I was on a fuel saving mission I would try 50 and see if she ran easy on a light throttle, if not speed up a bit and see if its better. If you follow a big truck then the slip stream will help.

50 is not a good speed to keep at because its right between 4 th n 5 th gear.
My next trip i will be looking to follow lorries. This time i was overtaking them cos i was keeping 60..

It reminds me of when i was young n in me Dads Cortina, forever urging him to go faster.. I always thought that if you drove faster, you got there quicker, so you used less fuel..
( i will never forget when he pushed it up to 106 mph once)
