Dont get a D3 or D4, terrible reliability and massivly expensive when they go wrong (EGR valves are a very common fault and pricey). Jap stuff is so much better than LR unless your getting into serious off road stuff then the LR starts to make sense...

Nothing wrong with the D3 / D4's if you're happy to do minor bits of playing with them. They look a lot better than that jap **** stuff too.

You say that but after speaking to a LR dealer he himself told me the D3's are very unreliable and expensive compared to other vehicles on the market. Sure there are plenty of good ones but there are plenty of bad ones as well, unfortuantly if you want a reliable off road vehicle its jap now days, I personally would rather a D3/4 for a personal vehicle but would pick jap for a works vehicle all day long....
 
Hilux all the way in my opinion, mine has lasted me years.
Ford Ranger? Forestry use them.
VW Amorak?
 
Geologists expect very little. Ranger for price or hilux 4work for borehole monitoring. I have a golf :(

seriously. I actually refuse to drive them now, don't stick to the roads in the wet at all, load space leaks and gear gets wet, crap on the mildest of off road stuff. just all round ****e.

For a day vehicle, that doesn't have to get you to work every day, or get the pregnant wife to the hospital, then a Land Rover is fine.
The Defender had character.

However for out and out reliability, I have to agree you need Toyota HiLux first and foremost.

They can be made to look really ubber kool.

My work is looking at getting a couple of 4x4's for our geologists for site work. Nothing to rough, just a bit of farm tracks, construction sites to get to boreholes and stuff that need to be monitored A decent load space for kit and samples, probably crew cab and reasonable ground clearance for heavilly rutted and muddy ground.

Sometimes loads of motorway milage is required, so don't think a defender will really hit the spot and a Disco probably doesn't have the load space. Ecomomy and co2 also an issue.

So, I would appreciate any suggestions, but guessing were looking at one oh them typical Contractor type Nissans or Toyotas?

I'll stick with my D3 for every day use... never let me down yet... for day to day use (26 days in and still going strong!! :D)
 
Stay far far far away from the L200 unless you like taking it to the garage and yourself to the doctors for back pain, the driving postion is crap.

The last Hilux I had at work was good but had a drone coming from the rear diff but was told by the dealers that nothing wss wrong and other Hilux's at work have had problems with props.

The Navara and Pathfinder (there both the same thing just a different body) hands like a giant lump of jelly and don't even think about taking it off road, after it gets stuck in the first bit of mud (no rear diff lock unlike the other pick ups) you will need to change the diffs and transfer box as they are bad for winding up and exploding.

Haven't driven the VW or the Isuzu but there are a few farmers I know that rate the Isuzu.

drive better than defenders. Better place to sit than fenders. more civilised than fenders. Quicker than fenders. Less juicy than fenders.

Personally I have driven a ranger for work. Easy to use, actually pretty good in muddy spot. Wallow a bit but go for miles. Being a ford you can just get in and know where everything is.
 
nah im more for the fender 110 double cab or pickup its just urgh jap hit i have driven l200s around natura park when i was marshalling for an event and in an inch of snow wet road kind of conditions you could drift the ####er in 4 wheel the grip and handling was **** my old series you tried to do the same thing and nah not happening they give you back ache its just damm why are these so popular when i cant even get out of the area i was marshalling a light slope with grass and dips and i got towed out by my series so dontbuy jap **** if you have to go anywhere off the tarmac out here all the energy companies use fenders cause they stand up to punishment jap siht just dont how many toyota fjs do you see running around ?????
