hi im leon i have a land rover series 3 dont seem to be getting 4wd i tryed the test and baffled.

1. engaged 4wd (yellow know down)
2. jacked drivers side wheel up
3. locks when i tryed to spin wheel
4. jacked passengers side up
5. spins dont lock
6. prop also spinning.

how can the drivers side lock and the passengers dont thats wat is baffeling me is the prop turning.

please help thanks.

Selector shafts in front out put casing tend to stick .
With rear wheels on the deck and 4wd selected you should only be able to turn either front wheel a small amount , but if you have both fronts off the deck turning one front wheel should turn the other.
So if one wheel off the ground and propshaft turns 4wd has not engaged.
Remove the small tin cover off the selector shafts and spray with release oil then gently tap the shaft ends they have springs on them and when tapped in as they free the spring will push them back out.
If propshaft not rotating and you can turn front wheel with other front wheel on deck , possible you have broken halfshaft. Unless of course you have free wheel hubs fitted and they are disengaged.

thanks for reply blackburn.

drivers side locks when just tha wheel is jacked up has a little play but do lock and wen i just jack passenger side up with drivers side on groung it rurns do have a bit of friction wen turning but the prop also spins but i thought if drivers side lock then 4wd is engaged but i dun get how prop turns from otherside

If the prop is spinning from turning the passenger side then 4wd is not engaged. The reason for the driver side locking must be something else. Try backing off the brake adjuster on that side?

the drivers side lock and when i i put back in 2wd yellow knob up the drivers side spins easy its just the passenger side thats why i thought i was box cuz prop was turning from passenger side but dont from drivers side

thanks.

Please make sure you have tested as follows:

1. Only jack 1 wheel on the entire vehicle off the ground at a time
2. Ensure both free wheeling hubs if you have them are set to 4x4
3. Try with both the yellow lever down, and then with the red lever backward (yellow should pop back up)
4. Watch the front prop-shaft when turning each wheel and see if there is any movement
5. Try this in reverse, put the gearbox in neutral and with one front wheel at a time jacked up, turn the prop, does the front wheel turn?

What you have described sounds more like an axle problem not a gearbox problem.

right update i jacked all 4 wheels up locked both front hubs put yellow know down and left jeep in first while running front prop not spinning and i can only get into low ratio by holding the yellow knob down then it goes into 4L but yellow knob stays down.

iv never had to use 4wd and iv had it 6 years

any ideas what it could be and how to fix?
