Hi everyone
I have had this problem since ... well 2 years now, my RR 2.5DSE automatic gearbox does not change to fourh, but sometimes it does thats what is puzzle me, I have changed the box, the ecu, the transfer motor and yet no joy.
The funny part is that when this accur, my turn signals sound stop when the engine is running but if I turn the engine off they sound again, beats me.
Would the two go toghether you think? any help would be much apriciated coz I don't know what or where to look anymore.
If you want to private message me please do so and I will respond ASAP or if you want to put some sugestions on my email thats fine by me too.

Thx and good driving

Are you saying you have changed the gearbox and the new one doesn't change into 4th ?

Hi yes is the same, the wierd think is that it wil change from time to time but only very sporadicly.
if that makes sense. it's a glitch but where ?
Any Ideas?
Thx for looking at my post

Sounds like bad electrical connections to me, you could start by checking all the earth points. You can find a list and locations in RAVE of all the earth points.

Did you get a recon box or just a second hand one ? It not inconceivable that you may have been unlucky enough to get one with the same problem.

Hi thanx for that, yes it was a second hand one, and yes it could be that this one could have the same problem, but the one I took off my Range Rover is working perfect on the Range Rover that the buyer brougth it for, so I don't think that it could be my gearbox or this one, it has to be somehing else and thats why I change more things trying to eliminate parts. Perhaps I haven't explained this wright, the gearbox if fine is all to do with how the car start, if it starts correctly the fourth gear works fine, it does no matter how many miles you do until you stop the engine, when you start the engine again if he hasn't start it right the fourht gear will not engage and does not matter how many miles you do it will not come in. thats the problem, and thats why I said if it 's got to do with the sound of the indicators coz that stops when this problem begin, could it be that both circuits run in the same wiring loom? I hope is explaine better now. but thx for you coments.
I will have a look at the earth points thx for that in the mean time I will still take any more sugestions.
Thx
In another note it when to Land Rover at the cost of £400 to so called the Computer to tell me at the ned of it that it had nothing wrong with it. well so much for technology I say.

datatek has the answer i think, connections and poor earth, could take a while,or it could ba a break in a wire, pick up a can of switch cleaner from maplin, and if you haven't got a can already wd40

Thx Roddy4 I will do that right away and I will post the result.
Cheers guys Much apriciated.

Don't use WD 40 on connectors.

One more thought, the gear selector mechanism includes a switch mechanism that produces a binary count output indicating to the ECU the position of the gear lever, have you checked that it is giving the correct output? It maybe that the Auto box ECU thinks you have selected third gear if the output is incorrect.

:blabla:
Well to tell you the truth, that was going to by my next change, I was looking at one on ebay and I ask the seller for advice to see if will fit my 2.5engine and he came back saying that he didn't know.So now I don't have one to put in but I was going to see the conector see if it's properly put in place, can you tell me how can I check to see if it gives me the right outpout?
but I will try to find another just to make sure.
Many thx datatek

Testbook or Faultmate will show the output of the selector mechanism. Put your location, there may be someone near you with a Faultmate multi vehicle, otherwise take it to an Indy and get them to look. You could also do it with a test meter if you look at the diagrams on RAVE.

Hi realy intrested in your problem and wether you find the cause
