Hi, with regards to liners, found this text on an RPI motorsport listing on ebay that advises anyone not to use liners - which they are selling!!!
Will they fit your Engine?.
This liner is supplied as suitable for the 4.6 & 4.0 engine from 1994 to 2003 and could also be appropriate for earlier engine modification projects too.
What are the dimensions of these liners?
The dimensions are as follows (please note that these are approx. and taken with a vernier gauge)
Overall height of Liner - 135mm
External Diameter of Liner - 99mm
External Diameter of Top Hat Flange - 105mm
Height of Top Hat Flange - 5.5mm
Internal Diameter (Bore) - 93mm
Why would/should, I need this flanged liner ?.
Perhaps then, you don't !! As suggested above, these liner types where originally designed to offer a possible cure for the endemic problem of all the 4.0 and 4.6 Rover engines suffering from loose liner and cracked block issues. If this indeed is your scenario, then replacement liners could always be an option to consider. It is not an option we can offer with our replacement engines, because we have little confidence in the long term viability especially when considering the poor quality of the existing cracked blocks that are being retro- fitted with these liners.
So what then is the best option?.
First let's consider that 'Rover' now have accumulated many many thousands of take-out returned Warranty, core material (ex-exchange) engines. (literally tonnes of engines). Clogging up the Corridors, Tea Rooms and Offices, so much so that they would just love to sell them back to us, at any price. Moreover because of the endemic original block casting problems, there was still no way they could have offered them back as rebuilt 'Gold Seal' replacement engines, without a complete replacement block being essential in the offering.
Considering this then, you can be sure Land Rover had taken a great deal of interest already in the idea of low cost re-linering options themselves. Looking into the possibility of fitting Top-Hat, Flanged, or even Ductile flanged liners as a suitable low cost solution.
So why then, did they reject it out of hand? and then subsequently spend, (the word on the street is) more than half a million pounds on commissioning, recasting and re-tooling for the latest Rover V8 block to blueprint specification, five years at least, after it was already history?. Why? Well its quite simply because they had too!.
Who? did they then choose do do the new castings and machining?, Cosworth that's who.!!.
Please then consider all things important before bidding on this item.
Well if you are sure Top-Hat liners are what you need and we can't demonstrate to you otherwise, then this listing offers you the basis at least, of the parts you need to do what's needed at a fraction of the price of exchange Top-Hat (flanged) engines. Why Don't RPi use 'Top-Hat' liners, It goes back a long way, but we used to fit such Top-Hat liners to achieve greater engine capacity engines, 5.2 & 5.3. Little did we know at the time that critically there was no real block casting space in which to bore into any 94mm Rover block. Subsequently all engine's would eventually develop coolant problems and some within a very short period of time. Fortunately now we are able to offer the latest brand new engine castings normally restricted to Land Rover Agents and mostly, never in stock when you need one.
