Hi Guys

I've just had a phone round looking for prices for a 48k service on my 2005 TD4. My local dealer quoted me £490 - I just about fell off the bloody chair!

I also phoned a Land Rover specialist in Edinburgh (Whites - anyone ever used it?) and they've quoted £273, with a "diesel flush" which, apparently, the dealer doesn't do. Sounds good value.

Given the current financial climate, it's obviously a no-brainer in terms of where I go here. The other option I thought of, and I'm not sure if it's a recommended or safe option, is 'Kwik-Fit'. According to their website, I'd be looking at around £175 for a full service. Obviously, my concern here would be that they wouldn't do any LR specific checks or jobs. Thoughts on a Kwik-Fit service? (crap I'm guessing!).

So, can anyone offer any advice here? Incidentally, my TD4 has only covered 24k - I guess this doesn't make any difference to what needs to be carried out, despite it technically still being a 48k service?

Thanks in advance for any advice! :)

Yeah, forget Kwik-Fit & go for the specialist. Make sure that they will also replace your crankcase breather filter/valve assembly which was recently amended to "Replace every 12,000 miles" by Landrover. A good specialist will know this.

As people are saying, do it your self, very easy, enjoyable and saves a fortune, and you know its done right. I service my TD4 every 6 months to keep it running well, costs me about £60, for that i change the oil, oil filter, air filter, crankcase filter, flush the engine, change the gear box oil, and the ird unit oil.
Every 12 month i also change the fuel filter and change the rear drive oil, that's another £15.
Had freelanders for 7 years and never been let down yet.
If you look at a stratstone landrover service sheet they do nothing else except tick boxes to say they have put grease on this and that and charge £550.

DO NOT GO TO KWIK FIT

£490 sounds very high

48k service time is 3.2 hours

parts neede are

oil 5w-30 5w-40 BMW longlife spec approx 6.8 litres
oil filter
air filter
pollen filter
crankcase vent valve filter (about £25 frol LR)
turbo boost control valve vent filter (about £4 from LR)
alarm remote batteries

as long as the specialist are changing all these items you are getting the dealer service for a lot less money.

Having said that, when i rang a LR dealer to order the two vent filters he told me they only need changing every 36k.

I said "are you sure? on my autodata service sheets it says you have to change them every service"

he went away and checked the LR service schedules and sure enough LR or BMW have modified the schedule so they get changed every service but knowledge doesn't seem to be filtering through to the dealers yet so £490 might not include these items.

at least if you know how long and what parts have to be changed you can make a decision on whether its worth it or not

at Kwik fit you will be lucky to get decent oil change!!
trust me they are truly, truly aweful!!

Thanks for the replies.

My Landy has actually only done 24k miles, but it's technically due a 48k miles service according to the schedule. Does it make any difference given that I haven't actually covered 48k miles?

yes it does make a difference

its a 48k / 48 month service

bearing in mind you only do half the annual mileage (6000 miles) you could leave the distance dependent service items and do them every other service (every 12000 miles or whatever mileage they should be changed) without adversely affecting the engine.

This would involve you keeping track of it though as the garage will probably not do this for you.

air filter
pollen filter
crank vent valve filter
turbo vent filter

could all be done every 12000 miles and would also reduce the service time

this is what i would suggest if you came into our garage with the same dilema.

Why, is he another one of the stereotypical posters that frequent car forums with the expectancy that everyone that posts should have a level of expertise similar to him? Or maybe that might just be you? Is it really such a daft question?

why didnt you just ring up and say "my cars done 24K can you give a me quote for having it serviced"

Well, because I dare say I'd sound a right tw@t, wouldn't you think?

I'm fully aware that my vehicle is to be serviced in line with the service schedule, no matter how many miles it has covered. My question was aimed more specifically at getting feedback as to particular checks or changing of components that don't necessarily need to be changed every 6k miles or so.

A level of reasoned feedback from 'Pussyeater' was at least evident (thanks for that, by the way).

But hey, if it makes you, or anyone else, feel better by pasting a 'daft' comment into your sig, then feel free - whatever makes you feel happy......

perhaps he has more patience than me, or has more expereince of answering daft questions in a way that doesnt lead to someone picking up their handbag

Not quite the way I'd describe it but, yes, in a way you're probably right.

'Thanks' anyway.

Don't take anything personally Broonster it's the norm on here to take the **** and be taken said **** out of without mercy...

It's a learning forum with humour, the more infantile the better and I like it that way..stay tuned and enjoy :D

Now pick ya fooking dummy up, and stop crying.:baby:. At least you didn't get the stock answers of

"Petrol & matches" and "don't let em wash it or the doors will fall off" That has to be a bonus for you any day of the week.

In all the comments re servicing there is never a mention of brake / coolant fluid change. Maybe no one does it anymore.

Not at all, I take good humour well normally. I'm on a couple of other high-performance car forums and don't have problems there. Not that I have a problem here, mind you.....

And I'm happy to say that I've had some good feedback about my original post anyway (thanks Biggeeee) and I'll be taking the Landy into Whites in Edinburgh later this month for it's 48k mile service - despite the fact is has got 24k miles on the clock :mooning:

Coolant needs topping up on a regular basis on the petrol models - it's a features to prevent maintenance :)

2yrs coolant/brake fluid I believe or at least it's what I do.

I just bought a 55 Plate TD4 with 39K on clock. It had a receipt with it for a main dealer service in November. It consisted of Oil (£60!), 4 filters (Pollen -£28 / Element(oil?) £10 / Filter Assy (Air filter ?) £28 / and another air at £2.93 (breather?), a bit of Screen wash and labour (£202.50) and it came to £392.18. I think i will be doing it myself. Does anybody know where I can get the Service Schedules for TD4.

Tony
