My second post about odd noises in a day - paranoia or what???!:eek::eek::eek:



I just went and changed all my TD4's tyres, after noticing that the front tyres (2x Maxtrek) were newer than the rear (2x Kumho), which we know is the wrong way around. After forking out a fair sum for 4 nice Yokohama Geolanders, having them balanced and aligned, I drove away feeling like it was money well spent towards protecting my VCU/IRD. So .... was most ...

... UNIMPRESSED ................. to discover ......

... while driving back home that whenever I pressed hard on the accelerator there was a THUD coming from the rear. This now happens if I let the clutch out too quickly and accelerate, or more obviously, if I press down suddenly on the accelerator (while travelling at speed) even without touching the clutch. The thud is really loud, at first I thought it was something rolling around in the boot so I even pulled over to look!

I've read the threads about rear thud and diff mounts, so crawled under the freebie and couldn't see anything odd looking at the rear diff (not that I really know what to look for exactly).

Why do you think this happened IMMEDIATELY after changing all 4 tyres???
 
When my diff mount went I got the same symptoms and it was the front mount that needed replacing (bit of a PIA to do too). A diff mount can look Ok but will be split away from the housing on closer examination. Check it carefully and yes they can just "let go".

The other cause is apparently the rear sub-frame can crack although this has never happened to me so can't comment.

Neither are that expensive to remedy if you are bit handy with the tools and know someone with a welder.
 
deffo rear mounts, you can 't tell just by looking at them.

i did mine and it looked great, but it was causing the banging due to the rubber being soft.
this was the front diff mount and is usually the main culprit.

Mine done that , Just had the front diff mount replaced , Maybe jacking it up was the last straw and it ripped apart ? There about £20 for genuine landrover one , You could have just swaped your old tyres round & put the newer one's on the back could you not ?
 
yup - there's a lot of play when i push the diff up and down. picking up new front mount from LR tomorrow and will replace. will report back .... thanx
 
u won't believe what the problem was! rear diff mount (front one)!!!! seriously, thanks for the advice folks. feels so much smoother and more responsive now.

on an aside note .... after changing all 4 tyres (bought it with 2 newer tyres on the front :doh: ), the VCU doesn't warm up at all over 10 miles. it wasn't getting hot before, but was usually "lukewarm" - now it's COLD. bonus!

You made the right call on the tyres , 4 the same size/make/model :)

Well spotted. This is eggsactly what the Turnip Test does. Peeps should carry out the Turnip Test and report their results. After performing the test you may be shocked by the results.
