Hi all, 2 questions here really, I am looking to change my current GEMS 4.6 HSE for an 02 RR TD6. What difference can I expect in fuel consumption, I have just completed a 750 mile trip to the West Country, plus sightseeing and used around 2 tanks of fuel. Secondly, would an 02 model fall in to the higher road fund licence and if so, what can I expect to pay per year?
 
Dude, give yourself a challenge to find out the answers to those two questions by the weekend, and if you haven't then come back to the forum.
 
I thought the idea of the forum was to post messages so that others with experience would be able to answer the post. I was hoping to get the views of 4.6 owners and TD6 owners, if I wanted official figures I would have gone to Land Rover direct. Your response as a senior member surprises me, surely you should encourage people to use the forum not dissuade them. I will look for another forum to post my question, hopefully one where the LR community will give me their advice being owners of the two vehicles in question. It is a shame as this site was originally looking good in relation to the LRO one, I have been a Land Rover owner for years and always found other LR owners to be courteous and helpful but in this case Dude, it appears you are the exception

unless he owns a 1996 vauxhall nova with blingy wheels and a massive spoiler then i just drive over it in me Rangie LOL

as far as ya question goes im guessing you obviously have a lot better mpg on diesel but going from a 4.6 V8 you may miss the performance, go petrol and lpg!
 
the extra duety on 4x4 veicals only aplies on cars 2006 onwards. iv just test drove a td6 and have also made enquieries about its mpg and i belive at best it will do about 23ish to the gallon. after i drove it i dident want to get back in to my p38...hope this helps,tom.
 
I am new hear and your first freindly response seems out of character for this site. People seem genuanly helpful. Ignore it and stick to this site.

I have a P38 for sale and a 54 plate TD6 WOW what a difference but the TD6 hasnt got the soul of the older models.

Post 2001 will have higher road tax and it is £300 for my 54 plate. MPG dont expect much more than 23 mpg on normal driving although got nearer 27 on a motorway run.

I couldn't quite see how owners of TD6s would have individual experiences on car tax, it is what it is. And no offence to you Thomas, but was your answer correct anyway?

As far as mpg, fair enough question on its own. Interesting the response from a TD6 owner, Chris, he gives a range of values, 23-27mpg, compare that average to the manufacturers average, yep the same. I suppose if every TD6 owner came back with a response that they only do 18mpg then there'd be something going on, but in most cases the average car owner gets the average mpg as declared by the manufacturer. Chris where do you get the figure of £300 from?

Yeah, it was a snotty reply, but the post struck me as a bit lazy, I knew the answers to the questions as a fellow Range Rover fan and follower of current events, but it only took me another 30 secs to confirm it on Parkers website. Did feel sorry for the guy cause he didn't receive any responses when I looked, he probably only wanted to chat about Landy's - you're all right its not in the spirit of this forum and I'll bite my tongue next time.
 
I would agree, with that, if you hammer a TD6 diesel you will get it down to 15-18 but normal around town steady driving I average 23 mpg slightly better than the P38 DSE.

£300 just taxed it in Jan, although that will rise to £400 as I have found out on my other car non Rangie. When it is due for replacement.

Thank you all for your responses, and restoring some faith back in to this site. lanmjdun, just for your info, I am an avid RR fan and have been the owner of such vehicles since 1990, my first being a 1986 3.5 Classic, I have also restored 2 classics, and currently run a 4.6 P38 which I als carry out almost all repairs on. My original post was purely to get some feedback from owners, as these are always the best sources for information. As stated before, if I wanted anonymous info I would trawl through google and see what came up, if we all did that, what would be the point of a forum? I for one enjoy reading what others post, I reply when I feel I can contribute something worthwhile, and I look forward to reading how things are going for other forum members. You couldnt get this from just any old site that Google picks out. As you are not running a TD6 yourself on a full time basis, the question wasnt aimed at you, read it by all means but dont belittle those who post questions, none of us on here know everything, we are all just trying to help each other get a better understanding of things. If a question to you seems daft, read it, laugh at it and then forget it, there is no benefit in putting negative comments just for the sake of it. As you can see, genuine people on the forum have been kind enough to give me their views which are greatly appreciated, and have allowed me to make an informed choice about whether upgrading to a TD6 is right for me.
 
Hi Pete, yep agree that the V8 is unbeatable, it's a bit like marmite, you either love them or you hate them. I'm just looking at diesel as an everyday vehicle, I still have a 1990 classic with the 3.9 unit, cant see me parting with that one for some time yet.
 
My 1995 P38 dse (manual) was giving me roughly 24mpg.
I've recent bought a td6 (05), this is giving 22.5mpg currently.
I am considering an engine remap. Apparently this will improve mpg by 10%-25% depending on your right foot.
 
well im gonna be different from the rest here, my td6 has been remapped and on a run recently measured tank to tank returned 32 mpg. that was on cruise at 75mph on the way back from cornwall, normally round town it does 27-28 mpg. you fellas that are getting early 20s must be right foot happy, road tax reminder has just come in at £260 per year so again i dont know where the 300 comes from.
