Hi all, I am currently planning to fit a Rover 4.6 v8 into my defender. Currently running a disco 300tdi mated to a disco r380 box and disco transfer box. My question is is this actually possible. Have come across a couple of threads suggesting that the gear ratios will be wrong. Another potential problem that was highlighted was that the engine will sit to far back however i have use the disco (long) bellhousing so think that the clearance issue wont be a problem. Any advice or help very much appreciated! Cheers Pete

course it can be done.

if he can get a 5.9L cummin deisel in, im sure a rover 4.6 would be no problem! being a rover engine, there may even be adaptor plates etc to help you along.
The guy I bought my 110 off was thinking of doing the same.

yer hes had to use a different gearbox though. I just need to know if i can use my existing disco r380 or even a def lt77 that i have.

Has to be a V8 gearbox or you will blow it to bits!!!
Auto is the kindest to you drive train.

I did this conversion to mine but with the 3.9 so if you are serious and have deep pockets as it costs more than u think. I will give you more info along the way

That's my mate's 90 :D Rode in it today in fact.

And yes it does prove that anything's possible. Rover 4.6 will be a piece of **** to mount and fit, ideally megasquirted!

Sure i gave seen a video on youtube of a defender with a 4.6 in it , if my memory is right was a 90 with fabric top

Cheers for all the replys guys. Can i fit a V8 r380 out of a disco? Ino that this will put the selectors in the "wrong" place however this isnt an issue for me as ive already modified my seatbox due to the current set-up. Just want to confirm that the total length of the engine and gearbox wont be to long? Cheers Pete

why would the gear ratios be wrong ,disco t/box is the one youd want ,engine should sit forward as lr put v8s and box converted to defender spec ,box will need oil cooler which all r380s have provision for ,v8 transmission like 300tdi sits further forward compared to 200 tdi and previous and so share the same seat box and floor plates etc ,parts from defender efi like pipe for airflow meter ,cooling pipes ,exhaust etc would make a nice conversion if engine sat in correct position

I dont no why the ratios would be wrong. Just read it somewhere. so there should be no problems with physically fitting the block and disco gearbox into the vehicle if the gearbox is left in its original position? Just want to make sure im not gonna have a V8 sat pocking out the front grill if i use a disco box? Cheers

lr already fit v8 efi in defenders ,disco box is the same as defender box apart from gear box selctor mechanism but this can be converted ,box does sit further forward compared to 200 or previous as 300 does and leaves fan near rad as 300 and room for air box at rear of engine with pre-existing pipe work available id change seat box ,prop shafts etc if your truck is pre-300tdi as fitted as lr do makes everything else easier
