Hi All,
I'm going to be fitting my cylinder heads back on this weekend with replacement Elring composite head gaskets.
I've read and reread the torquing proceedure in RAVE, but thought I'd ask if there are tips you can give me before I start.
It took two of us leaning on a 4 foot breaker bar to get the old bolts out, putting that much pressure on a bolt in an aluminium head whilst doing it back up makes me feel a little apprehensive to say the least.
I've bought new quality stretch bolts from Turner Engineering, and a brand new 5/8 6 sided impact socket just for the job.
 
Got a tip for when you finish.

Wind your torque wrench back to minimum torque value to relax spring. It will stay calibrated for longer.

Never used stretch bolts though. Is it a weird low torque centre to outer + half turn?
 
I put tipex on all my head bolts before the final turn so I could accurately judge how much to turn each bolt is it a final 90 degree turn after final torque ?? down. Between the final torque and final turn go have a cup of tea to give the stretch bolts time to relax, worked for me
 
You can clearly see my tipped markings making the final turn pretty accurate as I don't have a gauge

Correct proceedure is 20Nm, then 90 degrees, and another 90 degrees.

I've bought a torque angle guage, but a cheap one. I'm a bit worried it might not be up to the task, or how it'll be for clearance when I'm in there, so it'll probably be tipex for me too!

Cup of tea it is, not sure how I'd react if I broke a bolt in there, or stripped the threads on a hole...
 
My feeling is the trouble here is the consistency of steel required is not attained as most fasteners are imported from China nowadays. I'm not xenophobic, Italy also makes crãp steel
