Hi All,

I'm rebuilding my engine/gearbox/transfer box assembly and I can't remember where the breather hoses run?

I seem yo have 3. One is obvious, but others don't seem to make sense. One has a banjo bolt connector, and I can see where that should connect on the gearbox, but that makes it much much longer than it needs to be to just reach the bulkhead? The ends of two of mine have very neat 45 degree cuts in them, almost as if it was cut on purpose.... but it wasn't by me.

There was also a recall regarding gearbox breather hoses from way back so may be it's something to to do with that? Does anyone have any pictures or a diagram about how the brerathers should be routed please?

Al.

Having a look at other engines on eBay etc, it looks like the breather ws modified as part of the recall to go up to the bulkhead, but then U turn, and go back to exit down under that car somewhere. I suspect the other now redundent breather was just left there by the LR mechanics when the did the modification.

I have 1 on the floor in the garage at the moment, But just about to go out.
Will get some pics that may help tomorrow, if nobody else comes with the answer.

I appreciate some pictures no end! I thought I'd taken loads when I took it out.... but I don't seem to have this bit!

If I remember they all seemed to make a "U" turn down at the middle of the bulkhead, didn't go any further

That's what mine do (or did). There's this recall though...

I looks like they could ice up, and force ATF on the exhaust to catch fire, so they rerouted it back down to exit under the car somewhere if necessary...

Microcat shows the part with a long loop in it, and I nicked this picture from eBay showing the breather looping back down... Mine is the older engine, but it's probably the same deal.

Got some quick pics,

the gearbox 1 does scoot off to 1 side and is cut at 45 On the end.

LHD car and it would seem to go off to the brake abs area.

Gearbox and front diff on my diesels LHD & RHD come up the bulkhead in the centre finishing in an inverted U with the open end pointing down and secured with a bracket to the end manifold bolt.

If I remember the 3rd was a breather for the xy switch and came up in the centre.

Not sure there is a breather for the XYZ switch, if there is it does not appear in the engine compartment.

There's a soft rubber pipe that comes off the xyz switch and comes up by the bulkhead with a cap of some sort. It isn't like the breathers which are hard and have a U shape on tbe end.

There are 3 breathers all together. On the V8 they go up and clip on the engine lifting eye at the back on the RHS bank.

If like me, they've done the recall, you might have 4....

1 soft pliable one with what looks like a non return valve on the end goes to the auto box XYZ switch.
1 hard plastic one with a U bend in the end goes to the transfer box
1 hard plastic one with a U bend in the end USED to go to the gearbox. Now redundant with the breather recall work completed.
1 hard plastic one with a U bend about half way along it's length. This one replaces the old gearbox breather, and goes up to the RHS engine bank, but then loops back down to the gearbox and exits under the car away from the hot exhaust.

Those photos are very helpful @marjon . Could you take a few of where the various brackets go that hold the wiring looms and hoses? The ones that are held on my the bellhousing bolts and the bolts that connect he gearbox to the transfer case? I've got one of those left over and I can't remember where that goes either!

So took some pics.
There is not any brackets on any of my bellhousing bolts.
The transfer box has some, seems to be 6 bolts holding it to the gearbox, unless there is 1 hidden by the gearbox mount but don’t think so.

If you want a particular 1 let me know.

Perfect! Many thanks.

I think my extra bracket belongs at the front of the engine....!
