I have a 1995 4,6 HSE. When I have purchased the car, the fuel gauge used to go to empty around corners. I know how they work, this was due to been worn out on the area used most often on the sender part. Have replaced the whole lot, since the sender can not be replaced only, I find now that the new one from Britpart does register full on the dashboard after filling up. Have complained and been told to send the pump back. Now I do not fancy taking the tank off again...It is a s..t job.
Can these be calibrated somehow, where to register full tank? I have heard, that it is possible to do this with some cars..

They were not that bad. They have offered me to buy a new one and will get the money back, if the one they sold is faulty. They can not realy do better than that.
Just it is a not very nice job taking the tank off.
Only mistake they have made, thatfirst they have sent me the incorrect part. The newer P38s can have only the sender unit replaced, but my car needs the complete pump unit changing.
No suggestions please about calibrating them?

There's an article in this month's LRO about repairing instruments. I think it said that modern fuel guages can't be calibrated.

This is possibly because the arm has been bent upwards, either in transit or on fitting, so when you fill up it is striking the top of the tank before reaching full travel. Only way to check this is by removing it and checking that at full travel it registers full, then bending arm down a little. but this is hit and miss. At least you know it is full because you filled it. The gauge should show linear movement as the tank empties and at least you will know you have a good reserve when the low fuel light comes on.

Thanks for your help. Yes, I know how to sort it, but would be nice not having to remove the tank....This is what I was trying to avoid...
Just heard from a friend, that VW cars instruments can be set up this way.
Nice try...Will have to climb under her... :(
