yep they kept it under pressure and started it up and it was leaking not a huge leak but enough to start spashing it around, so looks like the water pump seals are failing under pressure, new pump going on tomorrow so should be back to normal. i am blaming myself for the water pump problem as i'd just bought the car when it failed and didn't know about brit-part pattern parts being a bit crap, so it's failed after 40,000 miles. i've opted for a 'g' part this time at £100 ex vat so should last a bit longer.
 
so it lasted all of 2 days! got another leak down the front of the engine somewhere now, permission to swear at it loudly!
 
You have the pipes that fit into the water pump, your stat and the pipes going to the pump either side, or none of the above..

Well after closer inspection it’s nothing major, water bypass hose from the expansion tank decided to move & rub against a pulley so sprayed coolant up the front of the engine, got one on order so another little job to sort
