Hello .
Recently bought a 2002 4.4 v8.
New alternator and battery fitted
Sometimes when I turn on ignition it brings up transfail safe. I then take the key out and put it back on and it's fine ?
Drives great really smooth and everything works fine all high low ect sports mode ....
Sometimes when I stop to put it into park it comes back up ? never comes up whilst driving. I've noticed my gear shifter is tighter than my dads who has a 4.2 supercharged ..
Any ideas ?
 
First check would be to ensure the gearbox oil level is correct!

if that checks out, get it on diagnostics and see if there is a recurring fault code that could provide clues.

Range Rovers hate weak/tired batteries and poor alternator output, but you have changed these...in anycase check for a decent voltage reading at the battery with engine running around 2k rpm...expect to see 14-14.2 volts..

Check the engine and gear box earth straps for security too.....

But do check the GB oil level.

Level is done with engine running and the GB temp at 40degC (Use a IR thermometer on the gearbox sump pan), go through the gears slowly and back to park, then open the filler/level plug on the side of the box, correct level is when a thin bead of oil dribbles out....

Went to the guys who done alternator and this was their diagnostic if you can read any of it lol . There machine was 12k so they reckon it will pick up all codes ..

If it cost that much is must be a T4 Testbook or very similar, which is the dealer diagnostic solution!!

Reading that, it does indicate a possible fault with the gear selection switch....this is mounted on the side of the gearbox behind a tin plate. They are prone to failure.

Hi - I am having the same exact problem ... Car works well and the message comes out only when starting the car or while parking. Battery is brand new.
However, I just noted that the earth wire was in bad conditions: the mechanic told me there must have been rats eating it. Could it cause problems?

What else could I check?

Range Rovers absolutley hate weak batteries, low alternator output and anything that will cause a volt drop...like a dodgy earth lead.

Change that, make sure you are getting a good charge from the alternator and your battery is top notch....

Any diagnostics been done to read the fault(s) from the ECU?
 
Battery is new ... The car has been diagnosed by the LR dealer multiple times: nothing seems wrong ... It just came to my mind by reading these posts as exactly the other day I found this cable almost eaten up completely and the mechanic simply suggested to put tape around it.

I'll ask them to check the alternator output: this could be a good idea.

Any reason why the fault message would only come up once and upon starting?
 
Comes up on starting as a huge current draw is taken and if your earth strap is goosed, it will cause a massive volt drop to all the ECUs causing them to go bandy!
 
got the point! I'll do it first thing in the morning ....

The mechanic told me he would need to change all the wiring, the entire bunch ( is it true?) or would I simply like to have the cable isolated? I asked whether there was any problem ... He said no.

This is the official LR dealer!!!
 
But Saint, my point is: why does it do it only once? If I switch it off and then on again, everything seems fine! Shouldn't do it again?
 
When a engine is warm, the cranking current is reduced and could leave enough juice to keep the ECUs happy....

Lets put it this way.....the earth strap might not be the cause of the issue, but it sure as feck won't help and could be a fire hazard!
 
I'll definitely have it fixed, but the fact that it resets immediately after switching it off and on again makes me wonder ... Especially as I tried powering it off and on again immediately and it disappeared.

Could it be anything that leaves a message in the ECU?

The thing is that transmission works fine otherwise.

By the way, when it is in fail safe, when I put into D or R it kind of jumps: is it normal?
