Hope someone can help before i have top go to a dealer and get shafted,
My wife has a 4.4 petrol 2004 rangie, a whining noise stsrted from even reving it stationary but came and went until recent and got worse, It started chugging and fail safe mode came up for a moment and then it died, The engine starts no probs but goes into gear and wont drive
No fail safe mode is on the screen but just wont move at all
HELP PLEASE !!!!!!:(
 
No Knocks and no diff change, Range rover done an waranty an the shaft drive last year as a recall but never had any other problems
Goes into gear on the stick but wont engage to drive ?
 
Well if the whining noise was there when you revved it stationary out of gear. That would suggest to me torque convertor/gearbox input area was at fault. First motion shaft is splined into centre of torque convertor outer portion of torque convertor drives oil pump. Unless the torque convertor has partially seperated company with the flex plate and this has caused the oil pump drive fingers to fail. But you would expect a lot more than a whine if that was the case. And it would still be making a noise when engine was run. If oil pump has failed no gear engagement is possible as the drive clutch cannot be engaged. If first motion shaft has snapped again no drive is possible. I maybe totally off the mark but that is where i would start looking.
 
I may be totally off the mark, but I'm sure I have read that they are prone to gearbox/torque converter failure. I believe there is also a problem with the autobox oil cooler in the bottom of the rad failing and allowing coolant into the gearbox.

Certainly sounds like that kind of area to me Keith. Torque convertor, input shaft, oil pump area.

well datatek hit it on the button, f...d gearbox £1800.00+ vat to rebuild + oilcooler at 145 + vat
Comon fault there is 3 in the gaarage waiting to get done

just went ahead as we will be keeping the car
thats all the oney ive saved running on lpg away grrrrrr
