Friend of mine has a 4.0 auto, the gearbox went with a bang and lost forward drive. still had reverse but nothing forward. Left for a while and then had drive for a short while then again nothing. New gearbox or something silly ??

Any oil in it? Could be the transfer box rather than the auto box, check the oil in that also.

Yes both have oil.

Could this be anything else, ?? or is it gearbox replacement ??

Flex plate, transfer box chain are possibles.

What do Sprag clutches and drive thingys do??

I know sounds vague, but I am sure if you don't get drive but get reverse, it might be those....but that is digging the depths of lack of knowledge....James Martin or Bemble are the Gearbox guys!

Someone else has mentioned Sprag Clutches , or something like that. Not a clue.

Sprag clutches are one way clutches either drive or freewheel depending which gear you are in. Yes, Bemble or James will be more familiar with the internals.

Try putting the lever into 1st and see if it moves, if it does then go to D and it will run normally until you stop, then you will need to start in first again.
