Hi there, I'm new to the forum, so bear with me if this is in the wrong place.

I bought a Series III a couple of months ago, it's been running like a dream.
Till yesterday.
I noticed a popping noise on my way home and when I arrived home it stalled before I could turn the engine off. In itself not a real issue.

Took it out for a spin again today, the popping continued, apparently only in 3rd gear, in itself a little odd, on coming up to a roundabout, I changed down from 4th to 3rd only for the oil light to come on momentarily, power to be lost and it to threaten to stall. Manged to get it into 2nd no problem, and a little down the road it went into 3rd and 4th fine.
Next roundabout exactly the same thing.
When I got back it stalled before I could turn the engine off, no idling at all again, which before yesterday it had never done.
I drive it daily, 5 minutes to and from work and up till yesterday had no issues whatsoever, any help/advice would be much appreciated :)
 
Is the popping misfiring? I'd forget the gear thing, it's a slowing down thing.
Could be lots of things, oil light is a bit worrying. Oil level?
Look at plugs if one is coloured differently, change it. Could be plug, leads , dizzy or points (if it's still on points).
Failing that, do a compression test.
 
Yes, it's a petrol, and yes I think the popping is misfiring. Oil's fine, topped it up before taking it out today, The garage did a service before I bought it, although I have yet to do one myself (it's top of my to do list).

SpringDon, you say forget the gear thing? I hadn't had this happen before, it was nigh on impossible to get it into gear.
When I got it I drove back from Yorkshire in it without hitch (I live in Norfolk), and a week later went down to Essex to visit family in it, didn't experience anything like it either time.

Your oil light coming on would be the bit that worries me the most - could be low oil pressure, could be a duff oil pressure switch, though, if it only does it just as its about to stall, its probably (and hopefully) entirely normal...

might even be the wrong dipstick fooling you into thinking there is enough oil in there...(remote possibility that one - but if you change it yourself, you will know how much you have to put in to get to the full mark on said dipstick..... ).

However, given that it has just been serviced by a "garage", did they use the correct oil? (viscosity and spec) - there was a thread on here recently about "garages" and their proclivities, which is largely why i mention it here.

And, of course, it could just be sloshing about in the sump, and loosing pickup to the pump due to the high speeds at which you drive:eek: ... :D... or not.
 
You need to decide what to investigate. The gear won't affect the engine running (unless you're trying to do 2mph in 3rd)
If it's difficult to get into gear, it could the clutch dragging which could also cause your stall as you slow down.
If it selects gears then concentrate on the engine running (ignition etc).
You have to do one thing at a time otherwise you could start going round in circles.

check oil level and tappets
 
Does it tickover steadily when standing , might just need tickover speed lifting , ie when you are taking your foot off the accelerator engine speed is dropping below the point where it creates enough pressure to put the oil light off.
 
Feel reasonably confident there's no problem with the oil at this point in time. The garage specialised in old series landrovers, so I'm hopeful that it was the right oil they used.
I bought it from John Brown 4x4's, they fitted a new clutch before I bought it.
It ticks over fine, oil light goes off as per.
Took it out again this morning, and it drove perfectly, no oil light coming on, no loss of power, back to the way it was a few days ago.
Think I may have to sit on it for a while, see if it happens again
 
I had a series three diesel that would show the oil light when braking to a stop or slow down. There was a baffled sump option at one time, I never did get to the reason for mine but ensured I put the full 11 ? pints of oil in when changing and then checked it was right on the dip stick. After that I ran with a 1/4 to 1/2 pint over and no light coming on.
 
I'd suspect the coil and or the condenser causing a misfiring which is why all your lights are coming on. I'd focus on the coil could be about to fail.
