So I’ve been driving more sensibly since the fuel price rocketed.
Last tank average was 36 mpg. not bad for a 110 TD5. The disco transfer box has made all the difference.

That's almost unbelievable. Are you sure that's correct? That's small petrol hatchback economy.

With very gentle driving, not topping 50mph and very careful gear changes I get tops 27mpg, more often with regular normal driving it averages 25mpg, that's in my td5 90.

Yep. I used to get 33 at a push on my commute but that was hilly.
High ratio transfer box is the key, it’s like having another gear.

My 1984 110 has a 200tdi and disco box, 285 tyres, my average is 32mpg. That includes occasional towing a 3/4 ton of boat and trailer short distances.
Normally my max speed is 60mph ...
Before with 2.5N/A and standard transfer box I was lucky to get 20mpg.

l managed to get 32mpg out of my 110 TD5 while touring Spain.

l've never managed it in the U.K.
26-28mpg is my average.

My td5 did about 34-35mpg on runs wife's 1600 mini does 38mpg (petrol) D3 does around 30mpg driving sensible TY

ls that Defender or Discovery TD5
And at what speed?

Even at a steady 60mph l've never managed that from any of the four TD5 Defenders we've owned, and one of them was bought new.

Discovery td5 cracking rebuilt lump Norfolk to the Eiffel tower 3/4 of a tank no caravan. My Tdv6 did Beziers south of France to Norfolk started with full tank towing large caravan i put in about 150E until back to UK (two years ago) and I got two French speeding tickets TY

The disco2 transfer box is the key.

2004 110 double cab. The high ratio disco box is the key. It drops the revs right down in 5th.

Most folks are driving stupidly slowly now, to the point it will be harming their mpg!! That is until they get to the dual carriageway on my commute to work! It's a drag strip :( that little 0.9l corda can get up to 90 after a mile or so sitting in lane 2 with everyone queued behind

I'm sure my squaddy-taxi (1986 2.5nad Ninety TUL,FFW) was better than that, both locally and on a ~25 mile motorway comute @ 'motorway' speeds (50mph on a good day:p)

it's going to be worse now as newly converted to 200tdi so I'll be enjoying the PoWaH and acceleration:rolleyes:

^^running with standard t/box etc.:(

I have a 200tdi Disco t/box waiting for a rebuild but that'll probably take a few years:oops:

What car is that?

l can't believe you could get anywhere near 50mpg from a 200tdi Defender 110 let alone over 60mpg

We had a pristine 300tdi 90 CSW and 35mpg was achieved driving very carefully never allowing the turbo to fully spool up and sitting at 30mph, coasting on downhills, etc

ln my 110 TD5 l've never achieved above 35mpg and that was some effort.

My 110 TD5 doesn't get anything like, high 20's normally
Theres probably a speed that the superb aerodynamics of the body cease to function :D

Look out for a cheap 1.4 tfer box, no one wants them as they all wet their pants over the disco 1.2 unit.
1.4 suits the 200 perfectly so long as it is on 235/85 or 7.50 tyres.

theres either a 1.4 0r 1.6 in the Ninety as it is, thinking its 1.4 as thats (supposedly??) what the army / LR fitted in 2.5nad Nineties:)

have Disco sized 205r16 tyres now but did have 7.50 16's (MUCH BIGGER:eek:) when we first had it (& that was with the luggish 2.5nad:confused:)

it will happily 'pull' ~30mph in fifth gear up a hill now but the smaller tyres and 200tdi probably suit that:D

Rich.
