Starter has started needing coaxed into life, after the glows I give it a few quick turns to position III, I hear the solenoid banging a few times then it will usually go.

So question, do I take it off and try to replace the contacts or by the time they get to this stage is the motor worn etc?

I don’t want to drop it, replace the contacts/solenoid etc for it to fail by another part in the near future, I guess you get warning when it’s the motor failing, and the bearings probably aren’t a common failure point since the motor won’t actually do many revolutions in its life.

I want a Bosch – ERR5009G – Paddocks have it for about £174 inc. VAT – I would also settle for a Valeo unless anyone has anything bad to say about them but I can’t even find them anymore.

There seems to be a total lack of OE starters on the market.

Anyone seen any outlets for them? Or would I be as well to rebuild mine?

Right I've just got an uprated Bosch unit for £127.50 inc. VAT & P&P.

2 times more powerful that the OE unit, spins faster and permanent magnet (better cold starting) - so I will see if my disco starts more like my 90 now - and it draws less current.

Sucess!

Well my new starter came and I am very pleased with it so far, looks good quality, good casting and well machined, Bosch motor and solenoid.

I'm looking forward to getting it fitted and trying it out!
