Sorry for the delay.
Yes...my truck is a 90 - sorry for Ny confusion there.
I’ve checked the stop solenoid and that works OK.
I’m at my wits end now. Called local garages and none seemed to know anything about the 300TDI engine which I can’t beleive as it’s such a basic common engine. Anyway...before I have it towed away and get stiffed for a load of money, does anyone have any further ideas?
BTW, the engine will idle indefinitely but once I try to rev it or put any strain on it, it just stalls.

Thanks again so far for your help.

Clutching at straws here but check you don't have fuel evident around the timing case wadeing hole, maybe the front FIP seal has gone.
Have you had the two banjo bolts off the FIP? Mixing them up gives the same symptoms.

Could the timing have slipped, either belt or maybe crank pulley key snapped. See if the crank pulley is loose.
Wrong fuel in it ???

Well.....
Got the truck taken to First Diesel in Croydon.
They identified the problem as the main fuel pump and rebuilt it.
They took it for a test drive and the thing ran out of fuel - they said that the fuel gauge read 1/4 full but there was no fuel coming through so something weird there.
They put £15 of diesel in and it's all working fine now.

So it may be the sender? Funny as I've had it down to 'reserve' plenty of times in the past with no problems.
Maybe it was that all along? They said the pump was in a sad state tho and very weak......or maybe that's what they would say....

So how do I check/replace the sender - been looking on t'internet for clues but not sure.
