It seems you can do it without moving the belt :D. Just slacken the stud, screwdriver to prise tensioner away from block, fit penny and tighten.
Worst bit i found was getting the penny washer in position.

erm
:(
broke allen key in bolt :(
but EGR mod already done - plate in end of pipe from EGR to top hose.
Still about 5mm of sticky ****e in all the hoses and intercooler and manifold tho - will need to strip at some time.

removed vacuum pipe and lecky connector tho.

I thought you wuz using an allen key socket?

I is just a genius. I was right then.;):p

the tensioner roller is acutually 'out of true' the penny brings it back in line Its a manufacturing fault on these engines. Replace the bearing £5 off ebay. instructions are in this forum.

Im dam certain that back in 1996 when my dad got his 300tdi disco from lex landrover in Bury it wasnt long before they re-called it for a mod to the belt etcc etc, and of the top of my head im sure they did some thing with the door locks or handles before we even knew there was a problem... shaqme it had to go back 3 times for new transfer box as it kept jumping out of gear on motoway at speed. :D:D

Hi, After much messing around with all sorts of new bearings, new tensioner, THE PENNY TRICK, stripped thread in block, new dayco belt, change of power steering pump pulley & pump, genuine lan rover belt and it was still bloody squeeking.... I tell you this really drives me mad, well I have finally fixed this with a simple fix, use a Gates Aux belt, they are made of a softer rubber and compensate for the landy's poor tolerances within pulley's & tensioner. I hope this is of assistance to the weary few who still have to put up with this, good luck.

..

I have owned my Discovery for about 2 months now and have heard this squeaking in the mornings when letting the car warm up a bit.

Is it as simple as it sounds? slaken the tensioner and little sqeeze the penny in and tighten back up?

Do you just loosen the nut labeled stud in the picture to loosen it enough to squeeze the penny in??

Thanks

New landy owner ;)

well... on a 300Tdi Disco at least, you just slacken the nut in the middle of the tensioner (the middle of the bit that attaches to the engine), lever the tensioner forward with a screwdriver by a few mm, hold the penny in place and tighten it back up!

So yes - it is that simple ...and a 200Tdi is probably similar, although i've no idea to be honest.

If you're going to do it "properly", you could remove the belt, but I (and many others) didn't bother.

As for the nut labelled "stud" in the picture... which picture exactly?

Its a good tip, but I think using a penny might be a bit on the thick side.
Personally, i use a old feeler gauge to find the thinnest shim/s thickness that cures the squeal, and then snap it off behind the tensioner :)

A video of this whole thing would be really cool :)

I am a mechanical numpty - but this really is **** simple. :) I managed it in about 10 minutes.

Funny thing is the squeal was due to something else so putting the penny in actually induced belt squeal :D So obviously I took the bugger out again.

A penny does seem to induce quite an angular movement - I like the idea of the feeler guages.
