Just to let you know I have very little knowledge of diesels so keep any answers simple....please.....as ill be trying to explain over phone

Mate is normally fairly competent mechanic with no access to internet has just replaced head gasket on 300tdi (also turbo return hose at same time) Engine seems to be running nice and smooth but blowing out a massive amount of white/blue smoke.

Have run up to temperature a few times and when warmed up smoke dissapears at idle but as soon as engine is under load then smoke pours out again.

Any suggestions really appreciated

Cheers in advance

Is the smoke white or blue? there's a big difference.

If it's blue, my guess is piston rings worn on number 4 cylinder.

Did he overheat the engine when the headgasket went? My guess is that he did.

Could also be valve stem seals if the head has been disturbed, tends not to be quite as noticeable as worn piston rings under heavy load though.

Best rule out oil being inducted through the breathers or from the turbo (as it's been disturbed) before arriving at those conclusions though :(

was it smoking before the head gasket went? If not then hopefully not the rings. Did you skim the head or check for warpage as even with a new gasket if it was warped then it will not seat properly.

No smoking prior to HGF...but believe it did overheat slightly when it went...

Head was skimmed prior to re-fitting

Did you check the breathers and turbo pipework for oil?

Thanks for info so far, all the above suggestions forwarded to him to check, was throwing it down last night so dont think he will have had much chance to look, i'll hopefully be getting a chance to help out over weekend so will let you all know....

Try advancing the pump timing - guide here: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f38/uncle-charles-pump-timing-55111.html I've been trying to tweek mine and when retarded too far it smoked blue/white.

Could be dirty/stuck/damaged injector (they stick out of head slightly and wouldn't take much to damage) could be turbo leaking oil into exhaust but I doubt it if it wasn't to start with.

Could be a lot of things really, does it use any oil / water?

if the pump timing hasn't been altered during the HG change I would advise against doing this until the actual fault is found. Once the pump timing is out then it will just confuse matters more.
