if you watch the short video i've posted on youtube, you'll see that my defender's 300tdi rattles a LOT when it starts, and it seems to be coming from the air filter box and pipe. this goes away when a bit of throttle is applied or after a few minutes.

Noisy 300 tdi startup - YouTube

i want to ask - is this normal or should i be worried by it? and is there anything i can do myself to make it a bit less extreme? i'm worried it might be damaging something

if anyone has any ideas i'd appreciate a pointer in the right direction!

I have a similar noise on startup, gradually got worse.
Turns out it is the fuel lift pump (I think)

Should have a new one next week.

When I started her she made a horrible racket then after about 15 seconds it goes away, then she idles fine till she starves of fuel and shuts down.

Maybe?

funnily enough mine was losing power a while ago, turned out to be the fuel pump and this issue started after i had it repaired. still runs fine though

Does look as though your engine in moving quite a lot which at a guess is engine mounts ( but not sure I'm sure someone else will be able to help better) as for the rattle check the air box mount as when I got my defender the mounts were all broken and it made the engine sound like it was about to fly to bits!

If you place your hand on the airbox does it become quieter.?! I very much doubt that it has anything to do with the fuel lift pump, rather I suspect the small rubber shock absorbers have come away from the bolts which clamp the airbox in place, there should be 4. Inexpensive to replace, alternatively you can use QBond to repair them.

Also have quick peak at your engine mounts, but I suspect the issue is with your airbox. :)

check for any slight deisel leaks/weeps,
Sounds very much like mine does when its bleeding air out of the system, only lasts 10-20 secs whislt it self bleeds.
it may also be the non return valve in the pump has died so its draining back to the tank a bit when stood.
