so the other day i picked up a 4.0 auto p38 hse and iv had discoes and fed up of rot i want a reliable tow car with some confort i know they are a lot of horror stories of the electricks but im sure a lot of fiddeling and some time cant fix so the engine has another purpose and i had a rotten 300 auto disco sat in the yard so thought i would tackel the project today i started buy pulling the wiring loom out and putting that on the back seats and will come to that later next i undid all the enngine ancilarys har to cut the oil cooler lines but o well will have to make some new ones anyway and couldn't get the torque converter off in the car so pulled it with the engine

for got to mention this car was coverd in chrome strips so the actual first task was to remove every single bit of chrome i could find on the outside of the car

300Tdi p38. Surely all you’ll end up with is the slowest, nosiest and most unrefined p38 ever. Land Rover used the BMW diesel for a reason.

maby but

we will have to see i do have a back up plan but i am trying not to go that way and a 300 moves a 110 defender full and 3.5 tone trailer fine and im not so botherd about noise i like the sound of a 300 and refinent isnt key its havving a working car

Tdi’s are fine engines. I have two of them. I also have a p38 and wouldn’t want a Tdi in it.

The RRC with an auto and 300Tdi was a complete slug. Probably the slowest Vehcile LR ever made. A p38 weighs more.

The p38 BCEM and engine ECU talk to each other. But no ECU on a Tdi. I suspect just plopping in a Tdi might not be so simple.

Why get rid of the V8? Is there something wrong with it. I doubt a Tdi in this application will be more than 5mpg better and cutless by comparison. Probably easier to fit lpg to the V8 or concert to a bmw diesel as per a factory p38.

Still I wish you luck with your project :)

the car was bought for a differant project and i was just going to break the car but decided to have a bit of a experiment i planed to get around the wiring side buy leeving the v8 ecu and ancillaries in the engine bay may have a engine light on but it might work i know it was slugish but a manual pump ported head and bigger turbo and intercooler can fix that the 300 has roughly the same power as the bmw engine but do have a 3 liter sat in the shed that is for another ongoing project but it may end up in this if the 300 doesnt work but then it is more of a hastle having to mess with more electrics to make them talk

the v8 had lpg on it and it had a poped headgasket cos of it

im up for a challenge and am interested to see if i can make it work to get a confortable rot free car

nothing a screwdriver hammer and time cant fix

I think the forums taken a collective gasp! Noone but you knows your capabilities and trickier has definitely been done. Good luck!

so today fist i moved the car outside was planning to was it but didn't get round to it i wanted to get on next i tidy up and tried to clean up the oil and stuf that was on the floor after that i pulled the racer build off the lift and liberated the 300 in the process after that i got the rangey on the lift and undid all the props then removed the gearbox after removing the gearbox i pulled the transfer box off and undid all the back plate mounts to remove the back housing i did the same with a 300 auto box next i whent to mount the xyz switch to the hp22 and released that the selector shaft was different lucally already had a diassasembuld hp22e that has the same shaft to remove the sump of the hp22 then the valve block punched the pin out the are and swapped over the selector shaft allso using the 300 box means it has a kik donwn cable where as a hp22e or 24 has an electronic one after this i put the transfer box back on the 300 box and then put it back in the car

Just an observation - & you probably know this anyway - but don't forget that the tc MUST be mounted on the gearbox AND seated to the correct depth as measured from a straightedge laid across the bell housing mouth to the front of any of the 4 bosses on the front of the tc before bolting up to the engine.

Cannot for the life of me think why anyone would even consider fitting a 300Tdi engine in a P38. If you have to go from petrol to diesel fit a M51 all the parts are available to do that. The 300 Tdi is a far inferior unit and not compatible with the ECU interfaces as is the M51. A very strange choice in my opinion.

Depends what you have lying around, I guess.
